Well, I’m going to try. Dances are too much like parties, and we all know how I feel about those.

“Yeah, well, Hyla has a date, but I’m still making sure my ass looks good in this dress.”

I tip my head to the side, taking in the tiny silver dress that barely covers said ass.

“Your assalwayslooks good, Macks.”

“What’s the deal with you and Hyla, anyway?” Sarah asks.

Mackie shrugs. “I have no idea. I never have. But God, I love kissing her.”

We all laugh at that.

There’s a knock at the door, and Joel’s mom sticks her head in. “Everyone’s here.”

“Okay, thanks. We’ll be down in a minute,” Sarah says, double checking her lipstick and adjusting her baby pink mesh minidress.

We stand up and look at each other, then smile giddily.

Regardless of anything else, it feels good to be dressed up and ready to have fun with my girls.

We make our way downstairs and out to the front porch where Sarah’s date, Ian, is waiting, along with Miles and Joel.

“Hey, you clean up good,” I say to Joel, ruffling his thin brown hair. I’m so used to it being matted down from his baseball cap that it’s funny seeing it all fluffy. He’s looking nice in a perfectly fitted black pants and a simple charcoal pinstripe shirt.

“You don’t look so bad yourself,” he says, nudging my elbow.

And, thank you, I do think I look pretty darn good. I’m wearing my perfect dress, paired with Sarah’s shimmery gold heels. She insisted they completed the outfit, andshe was right.

And I’m clearly not the only one who thinks I look good, because Miles flips at the skirt of my dress and says, “Looking hot, kid.” Then he gives me his signature charming grin.

He struts over to Mackie and they look each other over. They always make me laugh. They’re like a more playful version of Joel and me. While I know nothing would ever happen between them, they don’t have the sibling type of relationship that Joel and I have. They are going to the dance together, though. They do that pretty frequently, because Miles wants to play the field and Mackie doesn’t want to be tethered to someone all night. That way they have a date, but it’s a date who lets them do whatever they want with whoever they want. And there’s no pressure for anyfunny businessat the end of the dance.

Joel nods toward Sarah, who is flirting hard with her date, our friend and baseball boy, Ian James. And he iscute. He is also obviously really crushing on Sarah. He got her flowers and took her on a romantic date before he asked her.

“I think Sarah’s gonna have some fun tonight.” He doesn’t sound upbeat when he says that.

I open my mouth, about to say something funny to cheer him up, but then his eyes widen. When I give him a questioning look, he nods slightly toward the sidewalk behind me.

I turn to see Aaron staring at me. He’s unaware of anything else as he walks onto the porch, eyes drinking me in with every step he takes.

When he gets to me, he lets out a little whistle and says, “Damn. You were totally right.” He leans in close to me and whispers, “I’m glad I waited to see it on you.”

Oh my Lord. I feel like I’m about to melt.

Like ice cream on a hot freaking day.

I don’t know how, but that sentence sounded a lot less like he was glad to see it on me and a lot more like he wants to see itoffme.

He’s still smiling at me. Actually, no, scratch that. He’s smoldering. Like a deep, sexy smolder that makes me want to drag him into the bathroom and do naughty things to him.

You know, if I were ready to do naughty-type things. Damn it, I can’t think straight when he looks at me like that. Seems like we went right past blurring lines into this uncharted territory.

I want him. But I want to be ready for him. And I want him to not have a date tonight.

But she just showed up, so I guess I’m SOL on that. I could’ve told him not to go with her. But what kind of message would that have sent?I am way overthinking this.

“You look good too, Ace.” Then I nod toward the sidewalk. “So does Caity.”
