I can’t freaking wait.

Aaron

My hand grazes over Rae’s warm stomach as I grind against her ass and kiss her neck.

“God, I’ve waited so long for this.”

She giggles and runs her hand through my hair. “I’m yours now. No more waiting.”

She reaches back and runs her hand over my dick as it strains for freedom from my pants.

I let out a long moan.

Then I feel a hand on my shoulder and someone shaking me.

“Dude, wake up. It sounds like a porno down here.” Miles’s deep laughter bounces around the room as my eyes flash open.

Looking around, I start to make sense of reality. It was a dream. That’s when I realize Rae’s not in my arms anymore.

I sit up and look around as Miles tosses me a pillow, which I quickly place on my lap.

“She’s gone.”

My eyes go to him, my dick finally getting the message and cooling down.

“What do you mean? When?”

He shrugs. “A few minutes ago. She seemed a little freaked. Said something about needing to think. Based on this, I’m assuming she was going to think about your—”

“Knock it off,” I say, tossing the pillow to the side and rising from the couch. I run my hand through my hair.I scared her away again. No matter what signals she gives me, I need to stop crossing the line with her. She isn’t ready. Or maybe she doesn’t want this at all. All I know is I need to put the brakes on this before she pushes me away again. I want to be with her more than anything—except our friendship. I will choose our friendship over everything else forever, because I can’t risk losing her completely.

“Dude, why are you freaking out?” Miles asks.

“Because she—she left. She didn’t wake me up. Didn’t stay. Didn’t talk to me. After last night, I thought we were headed somewhere, but now…”

He shakes his head. “Just because she left doesn’t mean she doesn’t want more with you.”

I shake my head in return. “It doesn’t matter. We can’t keep tiptoeing to the edge of the line like this. She’s been through too much to go down that road. Maybe we missed our chance.”

Miles squints at me. “Who the fuck are you right now?”

“I’m the guy who doesn’t want to lose the most important relationship in his life by trying to push for something that maybe isn’t supposed to happen.”

He stares at me for a minute, then says, “Nope. That’s not it. But I figured it out. You’re a fucking moron.”

I open my mouth to rebut that, but before I can, he turns and walks up the stairs, leaving me standing alone in Joel’s basement with a half-hard dick and an ache in my heart.

I’ve got to find a way to move on.

After a brutally cold shower, I get dressed and plop down on my bed, then check the many notifications on my phone. Instagram comments and messages, a few comments on a TikTok of me and the guys on the baseball team doing some ridiculous dance—Trevor’s idea, of course. And one text. From Rae.

I flip to it, any hope I had for us hanging on by a thread.

Beautiful: Hey. Sorry I left without a goodbye this morning. Had a bunch on my mind and needed to think. I’m not feeling the football game today. Wanna come over?

So she can crush my hopes again? Hard pass.

Me: Sorry, already had plans to go to the game. But we can hang out later or tomorrow.
