“You too.”

Then I head for the front door before Sarah hunts me down and drags me out of here by the ear.

When we get to the party, Jenny rushes up and gives us hugs. We walk through the house, and no surprise, there’re plenty of guys there. And booze. And a shitload of people. I immediately text Aaron.

Me: So, you called it. Lots of boys and lots of booze.

Ace: Want us to come?

Me: We’re okay for now. Gluing myself to Mackie. I’ll keep you updated.

Ace: If I don’t hear from you for more than 10 minutes, we’re coming.

Me: Noted.

Mackie and I are uneasy, to say the least. Unlike Sarah, who is charging ahead at full speed. My arm is linked with Mackie’s while Sarah has her other hand and is dragging us through the party. She stops near the bar.

Fuck. Already?

Mackie and I share a glance. I guess this is where we’ll be camping out. I text Aaron updates, but the party is surprisingly chill—minus Sarah downing shots. Worry grows in my stomach, but I keep an eye on Sarah and do my best to tamp it down.

Mackie and I chat with Jenny and Hyla and some other girls as they come and go from the bar. At one point, I’m fairly certain Mackie and Hyla are flirting based on the sex eyes they’re throwing at each other. I wish Hyla felt comfortable enough to go for it with Mackie. It seems like she wants her. Then again, the outside doesn’t show everything, that much is obvious.

Needing to use the bathroom, I put Mackie and Hyla in charge of Sarah, and go to the one down the hall where Mackie can easily see me.

When I get back to the bar, Jenny is there, along with her next-door neighbor, best friend, and now boyfriend—Greg. He’s all over her, and it makes my heart happy. And also leaves me wondering if that could be Aaron and me.

When I look back at Sarah, her eyes are hazy, and I see Jimmy Tucker coming her way. He’s no Mike Thomas, but he’s looking for the drunkest girl, and that’s definitely Sarah. And since she’s drunk, she’s being very flirty. And handsy.

That’s it.

I lean into Mackie and whisper, “I’m calling it. We need backup.”

She nods in agreement, and I whip out my phone.

No. More. Parties.

Aaron

“So, when are you gonna tell Rae?” Joel asks.

I groan. “I don’t know. Soon.”

“Better be before Monday, or she’ll find out from someone else,” Miles says.

“On your right,” I say to Joel. He turns his character slightly and takes down the Grunt with a headshot and there’s an explosion of confetti and cheering—aHalostaple.

“Thanks,” he mutters.

“I don’t know why it’s even a big deal,” I say. “It’s clear she’s not into me.”

Joel pauses the game and sets his controller down. “Okay, this is the part where I say ‘I told you so.’ Because I called it. I knew we’d be dealing with the fallout of whatever your relationship is or isn’t.”

“There’s no fallout,” I sputter, not totally believing it myself. Because I’m feeling the fallout.

“You’re a fucking moron,” Miles says.

Rolling my eyes, I say, “Thank you, you’ve mentioned that before.”
