“It bears repeating.”

“Yep. Especially because he’s right. You’re reading into this whole situation what you want to read into it rather than talk to her. And you are an absolute fucking idiot if you think she doesn’t love you and want to be with you.”

“I—” I glance down at my phone as it vibrates.Beautifulflashes across the screen.

Shit.

“Hey,” I say, shoving the phone against my ear.

“Hey,” Rae replies. Her voice is off. “Um, we could use some backup here.”

I launch off the couch. “Are you okay?” I yell in her ear.

We shouldn’t have let them go alone.

Joel pauses the game as he and Miles look at me.

“We’re all safe for the moment, but Sarah is very drunk and I’m calling in reinforcements,” she says.

“We gotta go.”

“What’s going on?” Joel asks. I toss him my phone as we hurry out the door.

I shouldn’t have left her alone.

God, I want to stop thinking that.

“Jimmy Tucker,” Joel groans. “For fuck’s sake.”

As Miles grabs the keys to Joel’s new Chevy Tahoe, and we all climb in, Joel hands the phone back to me. “We’ll be there in five minutes.”

“But you’re ten minutes away.”

I look at Miles, who nods.

“Five minutes. Bye.”

“Bye.”

The line disconnects, and I instantly want to call her back. I know it’s not my job to hover over her, but I don’t ever want her to feel alone like she did—last time.

I never want there to be a next time.

When we finally pull up to the house seven minutes later—it turns out you can’t completely bend the laws of time and space—Rae is waiting outside.

We all jump out of the Tahoe, but it’s Joel who addresses Rae. “Where is she?”

“This way,” she says, leading us inside. I stay close, but let Joel take the lead. Like I’m the one who is first in line to protect Rae, Joel is the first there for Sarah. And like they allshipRae and me, maybe we sometimes ship Sarah and Joel.

Don’t get me wrong, Trevor was great with her, but there’s always been something deeper between her and Joel, though it’s hard to say exactly what.

“They’re at the bar,” Rae says, as we make our way through the house. She grabs for Joel. “We’ve been doing everything we possibly can to get her to leave or stop drinking, but she won’t. She can barely stand now, and he knows it. We—”

Joel growls and moves faster, but Rae jumps in front of him as we get to the bar. Mackie lets out a sigh of relief as we get there. Joel’s fists are clenched. He’s ready to throw a punch. Of the three of us, he’s always been the most likely to get in a fight. I cross my arms over my chest, watching as Rae attempts to talk to Sarah, ready to intervene, if needed.

“Sarah?”

“Ooh! Rae baby. Rae Rae Rae. Hehe, you’re spinning.” She grabs Jimmy’s arm. “She’s my sister. Did you know she’s my sister?”
