“I’ve thought about that, but I’d have to tell Mom and Dad if I did.”

“Yeah. You would, but—”

“You know it would break their hearts.”

“At least you could get some help—”

“And be more under a microscope than ever.” She sighs, and I kick myself. She’s trying to help. “I know. I’m sorry. It’s just—it doesn’t feel like there’s an easy solution. Aaron told me I could talk it all out with him no matter what or when.”

She smiles at me. “I know. He always makes you feel safe in a…differentway.”

I chuckle. “Yeah.”

“Maybe you should go talk to him. It might make you feel better. I mean, I’m happy to talk to you, but I have a feeling you need him.”

I suck in a long breath and wipe at my face. I’m sure I look like hell. But it’s Aaron. He’s seen me at my worst more times than I can count. What’s another?

“Yeah. I think that’s a good idea.”

“So, go over there and when you come home, I will have made all the snacks and picked out movie options for us.” She raises her eyebrows and smiles at me.

“You take such good care of me,” I say with a smile.

“What can I say? It’s a gift,” she says with a cheeky grin as she walks out of the room.

It’s unseasonably warm for January in New York, but I still need a warm sweatshirt and boots to be comfortable outside.

I walk down the back stairs, through my backyard and the edge of Joel’s to Aaron’s back gate. That’s when I look up and see them. Him and Caity. They’re kissing and walking in his back door hand-in-hand.

My heart goes to my throat. I can’t get into any of this with Caity around and I don’t need her seeing me looking like a wet raccoon. Instead, I trudge back to my house, and I quietly climb back inside, slide off my boots, and drop onto my bed. I pull my phone out, click on his name in my texts, and stare down at the screen. I let it fade to black, trying to decide whether I want to text him or not. He said no matter what or when, so I woman-up and send a text. Then I lie back on my bed, wondering how my life turned into such a dumpster fire.

Aaron

“Oh. Oh fuck.” I let out a long groan, then I’m panting as my eyes slip closed.

Caity laughs and wipes her hand on a T-shirt on the end of my bed.

When we first started dating a few months ago, I wasn’t sure I could see myself doing anything sexual with her. And while we haven’t had sex—because my feelings for Rae have absolutelynotgone away—we do this occasionally.

Honestly, I think we’re more friends with benefits than boyfriend and girlfriend. Can’t be with the one you love? Fulfill your sexual needs with a friend you have some chemistry with.

“You were horny, too.”

That was literally what she told me before we walked inside tonight.“I’m horny.”

“Or maybe you liked hearing me moan,” she teases.

What straight, horny teenage boy doesn’t like hearing a girl moan?

It’s not like she was saying my name.

“I’m gonna clean up,” she says, hopping off the bed and strolling out of the room.

My phone goes off before I even get out of bed.

Grabbing it, I see a text from Rae. My heart sputters, wishing it would besomething.

Your pants are down from another girl giving you a hand job. Calm down. Besides, she had a date tonight.
