I’m beginning to think he’s right until I hear a sudden shriek followed by a groan.

Sarah. She loves that high-heel stomp to the foot, elbow to the solar plexus combo.

Mike looks back at the door, and I do the only thing I can think of to protect myself. I slide off the bed onto the floor, shaking.Praying. I squeeze my knees up to my chest, turning the shape of my body into a rock. If Sarah can’t get to me, at least I’ll be harder to move this way.

Mike’s rough hands grab my arms, pulling at me, gripping me so hard I’m sure bruises form. I keep my knees locked against my chest and my head down, but that doesn’t deter him. He grabs me by the hair, but then the door flies open. I don’t look up, I can’t. I think I hear the wordsget off her,but I don’t know who’s saying it or if it’s all in my head.

It can’t be, though. Through the cracks in my legs, I see feet, and suddenly, Mike’s body is off mine. I squeeze myself together even tighter, slowly shattering from the inside out. There’s shuffling and another thud and the sounds of knuckles cracking against flesh.

And then I feel a hand on me. Though my first instinct is to pull away, tighten up even more, I pause when I feel it. That tingly sensation. Safety.Aaron.

I snap my head up and a calm breaks through my haze of terror.

“Hey, Beautiful,” Aaron says, looking directly into my eyes. “Let’s get out of here.”

Aaron

“You know her well enough to know she didn’t mean it,” Sarah insists as we stand on the front porch. She saw Rae and me fight and followed me out here.

I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me.

I’m a jealous asshole.

Even though there was nothing to be jealous of. Of course, it doesn’t help that when Rae gets frustrated, she gets sassy as hell.

“Don’t give up on her,” Sarah says.

Like I ever could.

But it’s not that simple.

“It’s easy for you to say that. You’re not the one about to risk the most important relationship in your life.”

Sarah puts her hands on her hips, giving me a bossy glare. “The fact that you consider your relationship with her the most important one in your life isexactlywhy you need to keep fighting. You two have always been destined for more.”

I open my mouth to respond, but my attention draws to the front door as Miles dashes onto the porch, barely managing to stop in front of me.

“It’s Rae.”

My blood thunders through my veins. “What happened?”

“Mike Thomas grabbed her—”

I grab his shirt, yelling. “Where?”

“He was dragging her to a room downstairs,” I try to step forward, but he stops me, “There are two huge football players guarding the door. We need help—”

I turn and jump over the porch railing, heading for the side of the house where I last saw Joel as Miles and Sarah hurry to catch up. My face is red, my fists are clenched, and adrenaline is pumping through me at an alarming rate.

I never should’ve left her.

Seeing us coming, Joel runs over. “What’s going on?”

“Where?” I yell, as we get to the sliding door to the house.

Miles points, then explains to Joel as I push my way across the dance floor. How many people saw him drag her and did nothing? Disgusting pieces of shit.
