We spin in our chairs to face Doug.

“Hey,” I say. “I can leave if you two need to talk.”

His lips pull into a flat line. “Actually, I need to speak to both of you.” He walks in and closes the door. “A student in our dorm overheard two other students in our dorm yesterday. Apparently, one of them said the two of you were engaged in a sexual relationship. Unfortunately, I have to take any statement like that seriously because it would be against the rules for Kevin to do that as a resident assistant.”

I dig my fingernails into my palm to keep myself calm. “That’s not true. Kevin is tutoring me in statistics. It’s miserable, honestly. Yes, we’re friends, but we had a class together last semester, and that’s how we got to know each other. I’m sure it was just rumors from people who don’t have a clue.”

Doug looks at me for a moment and then says, “I can’t divulge who it was, but it is someone you know personally, Rae.”

Aaron.Seriously, I’m gonna kill him.

“Doug, I’m happy to go over whatever you need to. Timelines, I’ll show you my phone and you can check our interactions, whatever you’d like. There’s nothing going on. Yes, we’re friends, but that’s it. And yeah, I’m tutoring her so she doesn’t fail stats, but that’s its own dumpster fire.”

I shoot him a menacing look.

Doug nods. “I’ll need to speak with you individually.”

“I can do it now,” I say quickly. “I want to clear this up.”

“All right then, why don’t you both come with me and we’ll get this taken care of.”

We follow him out of the room like two kids being led to the principal’s office. And, of course, everyone in the lobby turns to look at us.

Great, could this be more embarrassing?

After more than thirty minutes of going over the timeline of when I met Kevin, my breakup with Aaron, my failing statistics, and my general friendship with Kev, I make it back to my dorm room. I’ve now missed my stats tutoring for the day. I’m tired, I’m cranky, and I’m super freaking pissed.

When I walk into the room, what do I see? Aaron, Joel, and Miles sitting on the couch, laughing with Sarah, Amanda, and Mackie.

I slam the door and they all turn to look at me.

“Rae baby, what happened?”

“Aaron freaking Cooper!” I yell.

He stands up and spins to face me, eyes wide. “What?”

I’m seething and I can’t get any words out. Instead, I make a beeline for him, not sure if I’m going to hit him or yell at him. “Do you have to be such a jealous ass?” I shout.

“Wha—what?”

“Rae baby, calm—“

I flash angry eyes at Sarah, and she holds up her palms.

“I just spent the last half hour in Doug’s office trying to convince him I’m not sleeping with Kevin!”

Aaron’s eyes go wider. Theoh shitlook crosses his face. “Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“Because you aren’t or because you are and don’t want to get caught?” Mackie calls from the couch. She and Amanda snicker with laughter.

“Seriously? Read the room! And honestly, I don’t know why you guys are so obsessed with the idea of me having some random hook-up, but let me clear this up foreveryonein the room.“ I look pointedly at Aaron. “I am not now, nor have I ever slept with Kevin. I kissed him once in November and that’s all. So everyone crawl out of my ass about this because it’s not funny, and now Kevin might lose his job becausesomeonehad to be a jealous ass and say that we were screwing.”

Joel stands up and looks at Aaron. “Seriously? First my brother? Now Kevin? What the hell, A? You need to fucking cool it.”

“Easy.” Miles’s deep voice is calm but firm.
