As soon as the words are out of my mouth, my phone goes off. It’s the ringtone I have set for Sarah. And shenevercalls me. Please, that’s what texting is for.

I yank my phone out of my bag and jam it to my ear. “Hey, baby.”

“Rae baby.” Her tone is serious. “You at Kev’s?”

“Uh… yeah. Why?”

She sighs. “Then you should either leave or make things lookreallybusinesslike because Doug is on his way down there. He was looking for you. He thinks there’s something going on with you and Kevin.”

“But there isn’t!” I cry, hopping up from the desk and looking around.

“I know,” she says unconvincingly.

“Do you really?”

“Okay, I was wondering, but if you’re saying there isn’t, I obviously believe you. But still, you should be very careful right now.”

My eyes dart around the room, looking for any signssomethingmight’ve been happening here. “Got it. Gotta go. Love ya. Thanks for the heads up.”

I hang up without waiting for her to say more.

“What’s wrong?”

“Oh, nothing. Doug just thinks we’re having some sort of torrid affair and he’s on his way here.”

“What?” Kevin shrieks, now looking around the room frantically.

“Go open your door.”

He doesn’t move.

“Kev!”

He heads for his door but turns back to me. “Did you tell anyone something was happening?”

I squint at him. And I kinda want to slap him. “No. I wouldn’t do that.”

“Not even to make Aaron jealous?”

I practically snort. “I don’t like jealous Aaron. And he definitely doesn’t need any help to be…” I trail off, remembering what he said the other morning.

Fucking hell. He said it to me in class. Could someone have overheard? Or did he say it to someone else? Either way, his jealous bullshit over Kevin might be why this is happening. I’m gonna kill him.I do not like jealous Aaron.

“You listening?”

I snap out of it and look at Kevin. “What?”

“If I lose my job because of your relationship bullshit—“

I cross my arms over my chest and glare at him. “Don’t start with me. You’re the one who offered.” I lean in close and whisper. “You’re the one who kissed me. You flirted with me first. Do not blame me, or I’ll use my kickboxing skills.”

His shoulders soften. “Fine. Sit your ass down and act like you don’t know anything—oh wait, that’s all you’re good at for stats, anyway.”

I drop into the chair and punch his arm. “You’re an ass. Now be a good boy and teach me things.”

He glares at me, but starts going over the unit I’m on. A minute later, Doug knocks on his door frame.

“Kevin? Oh hello, Rae.”
