He smiles and shakes his head. “Good. Sorry. This is stranger than I thought it would be. It’s been a while since I—“

I reach out and take his hand, giving it an encouraging squeeze. “I know. What’s up, Ace?”

“Right.” He finally sits down on the chest under the window. “Coach wants to see Joel and me this morning. Something about a job this summer, I think.”

I smile brightly. “Ace, that’s great! Of course it’s a job. You’re a big-time college coach now.”

He chuckles. “Small-time assistant coach, but yeah, it bodes well. I’m excited.”

“You should be. It’s awesome. You’ve worked hard to be where you are.”

“Thanks.”

And silence.

Awkwardness washes over us like a waterfall.

Let me drown.

I hate this.

My eyes drift to his. We share an intense gaze. My nipples harden more becausewhy the fuck not?

I let out a dramatic sigh, which makes him laugh.

“Yeah, we’re ridiculous,” he says with a grin. Then his eyes track my nipples. He chokes on a breath.

I flop back on the bed and pull a pillow over my face.

Could this get worse?

The bed shifts as he sits next to me. He pulls the pillow off my face and looks at me tenderly. “It’s okay that it’s awkward. I’d rather us be uncomfortable with this than be used to it. Being used to it would mean… we didn’t still want…this.”

The way he says that word sets my insides ablaze. If he still wants this, then why the hell isn’t he with me? What else is he freaking waiting for?I’m right here!He seems happy, centered, confident, strong, sexy as hell.Ugh.

I reach for the pillow again, this time to scream into it.

He grabs it from my hands. “Talk to me.”

I shake my head. I don’t want to push him. Even if I don’t understand anything about what we are or where we’re going anymore. I definitely don’t want to tell him I’m perpetually horny for him. Although my nipples have done a fine job of that. Thank God there’s a sheet over the bottom half of me, because Lord knows what my underwear might show him.

Finally, I grumble, “I just hate it like this.”

“I know.”

“But I’m happy for you. And I appreciate the coffee. So, I’m gonna focus on that.”

Not on your lips. Or your hands. Or your—

“Knock, knock.” The window slides open and Joel climbs in. He takes in Aaron and me on the bed and his eyes go a little wide.

“Hey, Joelskies,” I say, trying to find some sort of normalcy. “Aaron was just telling me about your meeting this morning.”

Snapping out of it, Joel says, “Uh, yeah, right. You ready?”

Aaron glances at me, then pushes off the bed. “Yeah, let’s do this.” He holds his fist out to Joel, who bumps it in return.

“Sweet. Let’s go.” Joel glances at me, then looks at Aaron and adds, “I’ll meet you outside.”
