“Since it’s our first year, I can’t promise you much pay-wise, but you’ll both earn a couple thousand over the course of the summer. It’ll run from late June to early August. What do you think?”

He doesn’t have to tell me anything else. I’d have done it for free. I’m not gonna tell him that, though.

“I’m in.” I extend my hand across his desk. He stands and firmly shakes it before looking at Joel.

Joel gives him that know-it-all smile. “Hell yeah, I’m in.”

They shake hands, and Coach nods. “Good. If you’re both interested, I’d love to have you at practices for the rest of the season. I’ve got a couple of kids who could benefit from some work on agility and speed from you, Joel. And Aaron, I’d love to have you working extra with Jamie. He already has top D1 schools interested in him. Going into senior year, he could use every bit of practice and instruction he can get. Can’t promise you boys a paycheck for that, though, but if you’re available, we’d like to have you.”

Again, we’re both in. He asks us to stop by practice this afternoon as he tells everyone about the camp. Joel and I leave the meeting surprised, but in a great mood.

Rae

I’ve missed the little things about being home, but not much compares to drinking coffee on the front porch while reading a book and occasionally chatting with people who walk by. I’m a small-town girl and I always will be. I’m enjoying where we go to school, but I’ve missed Ida.

I’m bingeing through a new series from one of my favorite authors on my Kindle when my phone rings. Seeing it’s the family I nanny for, I answer right away.

“Hello?”

“Rae? It’s Tara. How are you? Enjoying being home?”

“I’m great. Definitely happy to be home. How are you?”

“We’re good. The kids can’t wait to see Miss Rae again in a couple of weeks. Anyway, I’m calling because my sister is moving to the area and is looking for a nanny for the summer as well. She has three kids. I know six would be too much for you alone. I thought of you and Sarah working together, but last I knew, she wasn’t doing that anymore.”

There’s a whistle from across the street and look up to see Miles. I wave him over with a smile.

“She’s not, but I may have a friend who’s interested. Let me check in with them and I’ll get back to you.”

“You’re the best. Talk soon.”

“Bye, Tara.”

I hang up as Miles steps onto the porch.

“Hey, what are you up to?”

He shrugs. “Nothing much. I forgot what downtime was like. Kinda weird not being with the boys nonstop. Super annoying being around my sisters all the time. They are at the worst age.”

Miles has twin sisters, Addie and Jameson, who are six years younger. Thirteen is not a fun age, and for poor Miles, it must be hell, since they’ve always loved to gang up against him.

“You working this summer?”

He shakes his head. “I need to be, but the guy I usually work as an intern for just left his job to start a new company and doesn’t have much for me to do right now. He’s guaranteed me a job for next year, but I need something. I’ll go nuts being around my sisters, and Ma will kill me.”

I laugh out loud. Katie doesn’t like her kids sitting around doing nothing.

“How would you feel about nannying with me? I know it tends to be considered a female thing, but you’re great with kids, you’re responsible, and you’re so type-A you’ll keep everyone in check. Tara’s sister is moving to town and wants to have her kids with Tara’s, but I can’t handle that many. Since they know your mom and she recommended me, I’m sure they’ll trust you.”

He squints at me, then nods, smiling. “I don’t give a fuck who says that shit is for girls. That sounds really fun. Little kids are the best. They like being goofy and learning new stuff. Sounds great.”

I slug his shoulder and smile at him. “Perfect. I’ll call Tara and let her know. Just one thing. You’ve gotta tone down the swearing.”

“Oh, fuck.”

I stifle a laugh and flare my eyes at him.

“Right. I’ll work on that.”
