“Hey, Rae Rae, Sarbear,” Joel says cheerily. But my eyes are now on Jesse, and his are on me.

Five weeks.

Five weeks since we slept together and simultaneously fucked up multiple things.

We’ve barely spoken since. We’ve seen each other around at bonfires, but we haven’t actually talked.

I quickly glance at Sarah, whose eyes are also wide, letting me know she didn’t know he was coming either.

“Sarah. Rae Rae,” Jesse says, voice tight.

Joel looks between us, eyes narrowing. “Okay, what did I miss?”

Jesse clears his throat. “Nothing.”

Sarah climbs off the bed. “Rae and Jesse had a little… fight. They should talk.” Before Joel can say anything, Sarah grabs him by the shirt and drags him out of the room.

“That was subtle,” Jesse says.

“She’s not wrong, though. Might not have been a fight, but we do need to talk.” I motion to the bed and he drops down next to me.

“How are you?” he asks.

“Seriously? That’s what you’re leading with?”

“Well, I don’t know what else to say! I’ve never felt weird with you like this. We’re always playful, fun, flirty, and that all seems wrong now.”

“The flirting part, yeah. Playful and fun, no. I want to get back to that. You’ve been there for me through some tough shit, J. I don’t want to lose that because we made a bad decision in a moment of hurt.”

He sighs, rubbing his hands over his face. “Me either.”

I elbow him gently in the ribs. “Okay then. Mock me. Annoy me. Be the cocky asshole I know you are.”

He grins at me. “I guess I could do that.”

“There he is.”

“That mean you’re gonna let me stay for movie night?”

“Until you really piss me off,” I say with a smirk.

“So, we’re good?” he asks, standing up. “For real this time?”

“Yeah. We are.” I stand up as well, and he slings an arm over my shoulders.

“Good. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

“Oh my god. I could totally watchCasablancaright now.”

He turns to look at me. “What?”

My eyes widen. “Wait. Were you not referencingCasablanca?”

“Oh. Is that where that’s from?”

My eye twitches. “You’ve never seen it?”

One eyebrow raises, and he slowly shakes his head.
