My mouth falls open.

Can’t argue with him.

I dated Caityfor months, trying to forget my feelings for Rae, convincing myself she didn’t have any for me. Then I got mad at her for not telling me she had feelings for me sooner. And nowIhaven’t toldher.

Fuck. Again.

I drop onto the bed where Miles was sitting. “I’m an idiot.”

“There it is.”

“So what do I do?”

He looks at me like I’m the biggest dumbass on the planet.

Fair, because I might be.

Tell her the truth.

Why does that terrify me so much?

Oh, right, the whole putting my heart out there thing.

“I don’t know if she’s… ready now.”

Miles blinks his eyes closed.

“Aaron. She loves you.”

I tilt my head as I stare at him. “Do you know something?”

Miles groans, then his face hardens. “Yeah. I do. I know you need to talk to each other. I’m sick of this needless, endless fucking drama and all of us being in the middle because the two of you are so stupid and scared you can’t just put your money where your mouth is and fight for each other. Actually try to fix shit. Bitching to me isn’t how you do it. And for the record, I would tell her the same thing. Stop dicking around about it and grow a pair.” He growls. “Okay. I’m done with this conversation.”

He stares at me, but I don’t move.

What the fuck am I doing?

I don’t know, but I better figure it out before I see her tonight.

Rae

“All right, Miss Annie and Mr. Jake, you two need to go wash your hands and get ready for nap time! The rest of you need to finish cleaning up the kitchen, then head to your rooms for quiet time,” I announce as Miles works on the dishes. They don’t move much, so I stop and put my hands on my hips. “I meant right now. Go, go, go!”

Begrudgingly, they all stop what they’re doing and get cleaned up. Miles looks over his shoulder and smirks at me. We’re totally nailing this nannying thing.

Once the kids are upstairs and settled in, I collapse at the dining room table. My feet hurt and I’m starving. Miles and I know better than to eat while the kids are eating, so we wait until the two-hour nap and quiet time. We eat lunch, do some light cleaning, and relax for a bit while the kids have down time.

I rub my tired eyes just as Miles appears at the table, sliding a plate in front of me and sitting down across from me with his.

He takes a big bite of his giant BLT and stuffs some chips into his mouth at the same time. I start eating my sandwich and the incredible roasted vegetables Miles made. He’s an amazing cook.

I finally glance up at him, and he’s rubbing his neck.

I roll my eyes and lightly bump his leg with my toes. “What’s up? You look like you want to say something.”

“Maybe,” he says before taking another big bite.

“Since when do we hold back with each other? Say it.”
