“You too.”

I watch him walk back across the driveway, feeling simultaneously bummed and hopeful. That didn’t go how I wanted, but maybe tonight will. I don’t know what I want to happen, but I hope spending some time with him might help us reconnect again.

Aaron

She texted me that she wanted to see me, I get there and see Jesse? I’m not wrong to be pissed about that. Am I?

My heart nearly stopped when I read her text. Things have been quiet between us lately. She seems better, but she’s been busy. I’ve barely seen her. And I’ve missed her, too. But I haven’t missed seeing her with Jesse.

Is she still hooking up with him?

I need to talk this through. Can’t call Joel. No matter how pissed I might be at the situation, I’m not gonna tell him his brother slept with or is sleeping with Rae. I don’t want Jesse dead. I’m just tired of him touching my girl.

She’s not your girl.

Fuck. Off. Brain. Aren’t you supposed to be on my team?

Pissed off and confused, I walk up my driveway and across the street to Miles’s house, sending him a text on the way. I told Rae I had to get to work, but the truth is, I have more than an hour before I need to be there, but I didn’t trust myself to stay there with her and not say something I’d regret.

Miles swings the door open as soon as I step foot on the porch.

“Hey. What’s up?” he asks, ushering me inside and upstairs to his room.

Once inside, I blow out a breath. “I need to talk to you about something. Something Joel can’t know about.”

He narrows his eyes in confusion. “What can’t Joel know about…” Some sort of revelation hits and he throws his head back while groaning. He sinks onto his bed, pressing the heels of his palms against his eyes.

“Does this something have to do with Jesse and Rae?”

“You know?”

He pulls his hands off his face. “No. I don’t know. And I don’t want to know. I hate being in the middle of this shit,” he grumbles. Then he sighs and stands up. “But I don’t have a choice, so hit me with it.”

“Rae’s been sleeping with Jesse.”

His eyes widen. “What? Are you fucking kidding me?”

Letting out a sigh, I say, “I don’t know. I know they slept together once. She was upset, made it seem like it was a onetime thing, but then I saw him leaving her place this morning when I went to talk to her.” I wave my hand. “Now I can’t fucking think straight.”

“Hold on, over a month ago you were talking about being ready to be with her again. That seemed to disappear into thin air. Is that why you didn’t say anything?”

“Would you have wanted to in that situation?”

He shakes his head and stands up, tossing a hand through his hair. “Dude, you might be the biggest moron on the planet.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re using that as an excuse. It doesn’t mean anything. You’ve been there. You know it doesn’t.”

“Doesn’t mean anything, but he’s spending the night. They’re hugging goodbye? What do I do with that?”

“You man the fuck up. First of all, you don’t know she’s still sleeping with Jesse. You’re jumping to that conclusion. If she’s not, then you’re benching yourself for no reason. If she is, then you know it doesn’t mean anything. And by the way, let the record reflect, you did the same thing to her.”

My blood boils. She can screw Jesse, but my one-night-stand will never be forgotten?

“I know I slept with that girl, but holy shit—”

He holds his hand up. “That’s not what I’m talking about. If they’re hooking up, she’s just trying to distract herself, and you can’t pretend you didn’t do the exact same shit with Caity, even if you didn’t sleep with her.”
