He shoves off the side of the car and grins at me. It’s the same mischievous grin he’s always had, though with a more weathered look in his eyes now. “Any time.”
“See you at the wedding?”
He nods. “Yeah. I’ll see you in Charleston.”
He gives me a questioning look, so I nod, and he pulls me into his arms.
“Trust your heart, Rae. Trust his, too.”
As we pull apart, we exchange a look, me giving him one more silent thank you with my eyes.
Then I climb back into my car and take another glug of my milkshake before waving and driving away.
It’s all going to be okay.
I crawl back in my window just after nine. Pulling off my denim shorts, I let them drop to the floor before getting cozy under the covers, mind still racing.
A shadow falls over my doorway.
“You can come in,” I say softly.
A moment later, Sarah lies down next to me. I roll over to face her, our noses almost touching.
“Hi,” she whispers.
“Hi.”
“How are you doing?”
“Okay,” I answer with a tiny shrug.
“Did you talk to Aaron?”
“Not yet.” She knows what happened. She sent me a text earlier, letting me know that.
She nods, then bites her lip. Finally, she says, “I just have one thing to say.”
“Okay.”
She hems and haws, clearly working out exactly what thatonethingis.
“Don’t give up,” she whispers.
“Never.”
Her lips pull into a small smile. She kisses my forehead, then wraps an arm around me, and we both fall asleep.
Three-thirty in the morning comes way too early.
Sarah and I drag ourselves out of bed and switch off using the bathroom.
I throw on comfy shorts, a tank top, and a sweatshirt.
I’m calmer this morning, clearer-headed than I’ve been in a long time. I’m still nervous because of how we left things, but it’s the perfect day to ease into a conversation with him. And then the beach will be waiting.
But when I get down to the driveway, that plan feels wrong. I didn’t think about what it would be like to see the pain and uncertainty in his eyes, or his hesitance to even look at me.
This can’t wait for Charleston.
