I open my mouth to say sorry again, then smirk at her. She shoves my shoulder.

“For the record, Aaron, I overreacted several times last night.”

“And I should not have said what I said to Jesse.”

She waves her hand and smiles a wicked smile at me. “Like everyone didn’t already know we have incredible sex.”

Have. Not past tense. Those words twist something inside of me. She still isn’t giving up on us. She still thinks of the incredible sex.

There’s a forceful shove to my arm, and I realize I’m smirking like an asshole.

“I’d tell you to stop acting like you’re the best I’ve ever had, but…” She wiggles her eyebrows and smirks. “Just remember, it goes both ways.”

“Oh, I know.” It comes out way more lust-filled than I was intending.

“Slippery. Slope.”

My eyes lock on hers, and I know she’s thinking about whether she wants to slide down that slope.

She breathes heavy breaths and squeezes her legs tighter together, a surefire sign that she’s horny.

Warning bells go off in my brain. Telling me all the reasons this would be a terrible idea.

“I want to,” she breathes. “But we shouldn’t. Well, technically, I’m having an internal argument about that.” She smiles at me.

“Really? And what’s the argument?”

“That it’ll feel good. Then it will hurt like hell. My heart says no. Other areas say… ’tis the season for heartache and hooking up with your ex, at least if all thoseLifetimemovies are to be believed. I mean, I know they’re lame and never actually let the characters hook up—which is so unrealistic, by the way—but…”

“We shouldn’t. I want to too. It’s hard.”

She starts laughing hysterically and in a deep, playful voice says,“how hard?”

I start laughing too. After a moment, I reach for her hand. “So, we’re good?”

“Yeah, Ace, we’re good. This whole thing is hard as hell, and we’re both going to make mistakes while we figure this stuff out.”

“I think we’re good at that part.”

She tilts her head back and forth. “Maybe. Now, let’s move onto the fun thing.”

I cock an eyebrow at her. “Thought we weren’t doing that.”

She smacks me. “I meant presents. Get your mind out of the gutter.”

I inhale sharply and reach for my jacket, pulling out a small box. Every year, the six of us exchange books, movies, music, or something small like that. But Rae and I also exchange something else. Something more personal and meaningful. It was harder to do this year, because I always want to go all out for her, but I knew I needed to keep it simple.

I hand her the box with a handwritten card, and she hands me a wrapped gift back.

“You go first,” I tell her.

“Okay.” She grabs the card. I wince slightly.

“You don’t have to read the card right now.”

She smiles playfully. “I’m going to. You wanted me to go first, you have to deal with me reading it. Out. Loud.”

I roll my eyes. “Fine, fine.”
