Liam: Shit. Okay. Let me get Ashlyn.

Brady: She’s stable but still passed out.

Liam: Okay.

Liam: She’s up. We’ll get dressed and meet you over there as soon as we can.

Brady: Great. I’ll stay with her.

Liam: Thanks.

The ambulance was slowing. I braced myself against the edge as I stared down at Cici’s pale, unconscious face. What had happened? Things had been so great, and then it was as if a switch was thrown.

It was because she liked me. And the thought scared her.

I brushed my knuckle over the satin skin of her cheek. She scared me too. And now I was fucking petrified. I slipped my hand into hers, squeezing gently.

I could’ve sworn it tightened briefly. I held her tighter. “Cici, can you hear me?”

Her lips pursed, and my heart hammed in my ears.

“Cecelia, open your eyes.”

Her brows moved, and after a long moment, her mouth opened as she let out a long sigh. “Brady?”

“Hey, it’s me. Cici, can you open your eyes?”

Wide, surprised blue eyes suddenly snapped open. “Oh shit.”

The EMT guy beside me burst out laughing.

I grinned at her. “Oh shit is right. How are you feeling?”

“I’m fine, I think? Did I faint?”

“It looked like it. You were getting up, and by the time I got to you, you hit the ground.”

“Wow, that’s incredibly embarrassing.” Cici’s hands rose to press against her cheeks as her bright-blue gaze bounced around the back of the ambulance.

I shook my head. “No, not at all. I’m just glad you’re awake.”

She eyed me shrewdly. “You’re awfully calm.”

My laugh was tight. “Not enough room in here to panic the way I want to.”

A small smile graced her lips. “That transparency. I really do like it.”

I squeezed her hand once again. “I’m glad. Now let’s get you checked out.”

“Do I have to?”

I glared at her but waited until the ambulance slowed to a halt before leaning over to her.

“You just passed out in front of an entire restaurant. I’m not leaving here until we know you are okay.”

Cici narrowed her eyes at me, but I noticed a slight pink color had shown back up in her cheeks. Still, I could see the stubborn resolve in her eyes. Her lips parted.

But the EMT shut her down this time, “Ma’am, I’ve got to get you unloaded.”
