Cici held up a hand. “This changes nothing between us. We haven’t been together for months.”

“I thought… I thought something had happened. I was worried.”

“And that’s really sweet. But you need to go now. Brady will take me home.”

My chest expanded as I sidled up closer to her.

Kevin’s gaze crawled over me. I met it straight on, willing him to try something. There must’ve been a spark of intelligence somewhere, because he suddenly stepped back again. “’Kay. I’ll get out of here.” He reached out, and Cici carefully took his hand.

“I appreciate you coming, Kevin, but it won’t happen again.”

Damn right it won’t.

The nurse poked her head in. “Oh good. I really need to speak with Ms. Grove.”

Kevin’s face was tense, as he was trapped against both of us once more. I rolled my eyes at this whole predicament. I couldn’t wait to get Cici out of here as soon as possible.

“Ms. Grove, it’ll take just a second. You’re completely clear to go. It was most likely low blood sugar.”

Cici nodded, gaze flickering to mine. She looked more than a little embarrassed. “I’ll try to be more consistent when I eat. I get caught up at work.”

“I’ll make sure she’s fed.” I smiled at the nurse reassuringly.

“Good. We suggest pregnant women eat five to six small meals a day, rather than two or three. It will help.”

All three of us stared at the nurse. Ice-like surprise slid down my spine.

“Excuse me?” Cici’s voice was high-pitched.

The nurse glanced at her clipboard then back to Cici. “It will ease any morning sickness too.”

Chapter 12

Brady

Cici giggled, her cheeks pink in the fluorescent lighting. “I’m not pregnant.”

The nurse’s eyes went wide. “Yes, you are, Ms. Grove. Our test was positive.” She immediately began to scroll through her tablet, gaze deliberately avoiding us all.

My heart stammered in my chest, adrenaline streaking through my bloodstream. Cici was pregnant. With a baby. Immediately my mind flew to my internal calendar. Our first time together had been three—wait, no, four weeks ago. It could be my baby.

I stared at Cici, her beautiful face as white as the sheet she sat on. I watched as those full, kissable lips opened and closed. Opened and closed.

I’d never seen her speechless before. It only drove my blood pressure higher.

“Cici,” I murmured, stepping up next to her. She let me get close, but her body was as stiff as a board. I could practically feel the pounding of her heart as my hand dusted over her forearm. “Cici, it’ll—”

I was cut off.

“You’re pregnant? That’s amazing!”

I jerked back from her with a growl. I had almost forgotten the strange man who was stuck in here with us. And now he stared down at Cici with something akin to stars in his eyes. Frustration and anger bloomed in my gut. I’d wanted to say something. I’d wanted to be the one to congratulate her. On our baby. Because it had to be ours. Nothing else made sense.

Cici leveled her wide-eyed gaze to him once again. “What are you talking about, Kevin?”

“It could be mine!” Kevin said loudly.
