“Should I tell him not to come back here?”

“Him?” I raised my brows at her.

Cici’s eyes opened, desperate and wild as they met mine.

“Brady, you have to understand…” she started.

The curtain yanked back, and another player entered the game. An inch or so shorter than me, a well-dressed man was standing there. His medium-length brown hair was tousled, and his eyes were worried. “Cici, someone called me and said you were hurt.”

“Kevin, I’m fine,” Cici began, sliding off the edge of the mattress.

I pointed at the bed again. “Don’t stand up yet.” I turned to the newcomer. “Who are you?”

“I’m Kevin, her…emergency contact,” he said, his flavorless expression making my eye twitch.

“My ex. That’s what he means.” Cici freed her hands from mine.

Kevin seized the moment to bump into the room and stand right up close to her.

Thankfully, Cici recoiled from his movement, patting his arm in a dismissing, almost condescending way. “Kevin, I’m fine. It was nothing.”

“Nothing? They said you were unconscious.”

Clearly. Otherwise, the Cici I knew would’ve never involved this guy. Not when she had…well, me. “Which is why they called you.”

“Oh God, sorry. I’m so rude. Thanks for getting her here.” This Kevin was suddenly holding out a hand to me, offering a handshake.

I stared at him. Had he lost his fucking mind?

My brows shot up. “Excuse me?”

“Kevin, hold on. You’ve got this all wrong.” Cici spoke louder, trying to grab this new guy’s attention. Her gaze leapt to mine, confused and more than a little irritated.

The curtain slipped back with a metallic clicking. The kind-faced nurse peeked her head in on us. “I have your results, ma’am.”

For a long moment, we all stared at her. I hoped beyond all else, she would get rid of this human speed bump hanging on my date.

“I’m sorry. Can you wait just a moment? We’re dealing with something,” I told her, my face like iron.

Nodding, she disappeared.

Kevin, or whatever his name was, was still leaning over the bed. Closer to Cici than I was comfortable with. But I wasn't that guy. I wasn’t the one who yanked men away from their dates.

But God, I wanted to be.

“Oh Kevin, back up, for God’s sake,” Cici hissed.

Internally, I smiled, relaxing my fists as the man took one then two steps away.

“I’m so glad they called me,” he said.

Cici gave him an incredulous look. “Are you kidding? This”—she gestured at him—“is a huge misunderstanding. Brady brought me here.”

Kevin looked at me, brown eyes dull, then swung back to her, his mouth slightly ajar. I didn’t put much faith in his brain’s ability to connect the dots.

Clearly, Cici didn’t either. She sighed, trying again. “Because he’s my date, Kevin. Your name must’ve still been on my file. I’ll get it changed tonight.”

“Wait, I thought—?”
