“I promise I will. Soon. I just want to enjoy you right now.” I let my gaze sweep over her body.

Cici grinned at me. “I’m a pretty good problem solver, you know. I basically do it for a living.”

She was dressed in a prim chocolate blazer today, the white satin shirt underneath gaping enough at the collar that I could see a teasing glance of her breasts. With her makeup on and her eyes keen on mine, she felt more like the conference room Cici than my Cecelia.

My shoulders twitched. I didn’t like her looking at me like that, like I was one of her projects. “Cecelia, leave it alone. Please.”

Her face was surprised, but she nodded and picked at her sandwich. “Got it. Did you hear what I said about my appointment? Next week?”

“I didn’t.” My self-hatred rose sharply. I needed to be paying attention.

Cici’s usually sharp gaze was dull, worried. “They say you can usually hear the heartbeat at six weeks. We are just past that, so I think we’ll get to. If you’d like to come, you’re welcome to.”

My heart to my throat. “You want me to come with you?”

“It’s your baby too.” Her face suddenly went white. “Unless you don’t want to. I’m more than fine taking care of myself.”

“No, no, stop that. I’d love to come. Just tell me when and where, okay?” My heart pounded in my chest. The heartbeat? Of course I wanted to be there.

“Will do.”

“I can’t wait.”

She toyed with her French fries again.

I nudged her under the table with the toe of my boot. “I really screwed up this whole date. Can we maybe have a redo? Over ice cream?”

With a quick shrug, Cici nodded. “I’m not upset, Brady. I’m not some fragile thing who will break under a little argument, okay? Remember when we used to fight daily?” She sighed.

I smirked. “Those were the good ole days, eh?”

She leaned over the small table, shaking her head. “They were. But I find myself liking this new, squishy Brady much more.”

Her lips hovered over mine, a tease she knew I couldn’t resist. “Did you just call me squishy?”

“Emotionally squishy. Not physically. I promise.” Cici’s gaze flickered to mine, and then she kissed me. The kiss was sweet, hot, and when she pulled away, I followed her with a soft growl. I wanted more.

But this was her show now.

“On to ice cream? Before I ruin this date by knocking this table over?”

Cici shrugged, taking one last bite of her sandwich before brushing her fingers off on the napkin. She sent me a teasing smile. “I literally fainted during our first date. I don't think you can do much worse than that.”

I stood, reaching a hand for her. “Good point. Thanks for the reminder.”

Together, we strolled out of the restaurant and down the block to a gelato place I’d never been to before. She took forever to pick her flavor, but I went with a pistachio.

“Pistachio? Really?”

I picked up my spoon. “My favorite color and my favorite nut. How can you go wrong?”

She stilled, giving me a long look.

“What?”

Cici ducked her head, but I saw the smile. “Nothing. Adding to my catalog of things I know about you.”

“What else is in there?” I was almost afraid to ask. But I couldn’t resist.
