He was sure she had.

He’d seen the master spreadsheet she worked with.

It planned for every eventuality.

“So, when can they move it over?”

Another sigh. “They’re short on delivery drivers, so they say that it can’t happen until next week. Ugh!” She dropped her cell on the table. “Sometimes these people make me want to tear my hair out.”

He tugged her close, drawing her down into his lap. “I know,” he said. “But you’ll sort it out.”

“I always do,” she grumbled.

Something occurred to him. “Can they squeeze another delivery into the next couple of days, if it’s only dropping a couple of pallets instead of having to repack and load everything?”

“What are you thinking?”

“If they can make another delivery then your problem is solved. The other materials can sit at the other site until they can pick it up next week.”

She smiled. “And since it was their fuck up, we won’t pay for the second delivery, which means they’ll be motivated to pick it up, too. Oh…” She kissed his jaw. “That’sgood, baby.” She hopped off his lap, scooped up her phone. “I’m going to call them back right now.” She stopped, turned back. “Maybe you should domyjob, honey.”

Then she was out the door.

And he was thinking…

Maybe he wanted to do it, too.

Mel was quiet and sad.

But she was also strong.

“I’m okay,” she whispered, staring out at the scene in front of them.

They’d met up for coffee and pastries, but the woman sitting across from him wasn’t the same from a few weeks before.

Hislife had been going great.

And Mel was fighting demons.

“I know, honey,” he said gently.

She’d left Asher’s house, had gone home, but Asher was worried, mostly because she hadn’t slept a full night in the time she’d stayed there.

And it didn’t appear as though her sleeping habits had improved.

Dark circles under her eyes, creases on either side of her mouth.

Poor thing was exhausted.

“I’m seeing someone.”

His brows shot up.

“A therapist,” she clarified.

“That’s good, honey,” he said, reaching across the table and squeezing her hand. She didn’t flinch, thank God, but the limp way she held his hand told him she wasn’t anywhere near okay.
