Her phone chimed, and she glanced down at it, pulling free of his grip. “That’s work,” she whispered. “I should probably head back in.”
He didn’t argue, just grabbed a bag for the croissant she didn’t eat and then walked her to her car.
He hugged her goodbye.
When she pulled back, she stared up into his eyes, a glimpse of that old Mel for a second. “You’re happy?”
“Yeah.”
Her hand on his cheek. “Good.” Then she smiled mischievously as she snagged the bag from his grip. “Mine.”
“Yours,” he agreed.
“I’m gonna go,” she whispered.
He nodded, stepped back, but he didn’t miss the old Mel slipping away.
Didn’t miss the shadows creeping in.
Didn’t miss that after she’d driven away, he’d looked up and saw Asher standing across the parking lot, agony on his face.

“Go,” he told her, nudging her out the door. “I’ll handle the crew. You go meet with Mrs. J and all her minions.”
A nod, and hell if she wasn’t sexy as fuck walking away from him in that tight business suit.
But then she stopped, spun on her heels, clicking back over to him.
He had her spreadsheets on his laptop.
He had her bedazzled clipboard and her to-do list.
He had her instructions on how to handle both of those.
“You’ll call me if you have any issues?”
“Nope,” he said, snagging her by the waist and drawing her close when she started protesting. “I’ll handle it, baby. I promise. And then when you’re done, we’ll compare notes, and you’ll tell me all the things I can improve on.”
A grin. “I love you.”
He kissed her.
Because those words.
“You’re meeting up with your mom after Mrs. J?”
She nodded. “Yeah, so I won’t be back here to yell at you until late.”
“I’ll make sure to take a nap so that I can stay up late.”
“Pain in the ass.”
He nuzzled her throat. “Damn, right.” A nip to her jaw so that he didn’t mess up her lipstick. “Go get ’em, baby.”
A squeeze of her arms before she was out of his lap and clicking away from him…and he was enjoying that view, all over again.
