Tilted her head toward the door.

And he was tossing the napkin on the table, shifting before he fully processed that he was a dumbass for sitting there while Teresa ran off and—

His chair screeched back.

He was in the hall a moment later.

A flash of naked skin, blond hair flying up behind her as she turned the corner.

He went after her, wine still dripping down his face, rubbing the burning liquid from his eyes as he moved, closing the distance between them—

Which wasn’t hard, he supposed.

Because she’d stopped.

Was waiting for him, hands on her hips, fury on her face.

“I’m sorry.”

The words had been on the tip of his tongue, so he was surprised, surprised enough for his feet to slide to a stop, whenshegavehimthe apology.

He’d deserved the wine in the face.

He’d been pushing her because…he was an idiot who didn’t heed his sister’s advice, because sitting there next to her with her ignoring him irked him, because he was feeling all these things, and she…wasn’t.

Or that was what she was trying to present to the world, to him.

Because he’d kissed her.

He’d felt that she wasn’t immune.

He’d felt that her body, at least, had responded to his.

But he’d still been an asshole in that room.

“No,” he said. “I’msorry.”

Her hands slipped from her hips, arms falling to her sides, a blip of shock through her face before her chin came up. “Yeah. You should be.”

His nostrils flared as he inhaled. “I am.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“I’ll go and leave you to it.”

She laughed, but it wasn’t amused. It was jagged. It was sharp and rough. “I can’t go back in there.”

“Why not?”

Now she lifted her brows. “Why not?” Another of those unamused laughs.

He shook his head.

“Now you’re either getting off on fucking with me or you’re truly dense.”

He just lifted his brows back at her.

A sigh. “I just lost my temper and threw a glass of wine in the face of my dinner companion…when I’m trying to impress my other dinner companions in the hopes that they might cut me a check.” Those brows slid a bit higher. “Do you think that wine-tossing will equal funding?”
