That he was missing something.

Big.

Big and heavy and—

His mom stuck her head back out into the hall. “Go to the store, honey. I’m going to cancel the plumber.”

Right.

He grabbed his coat from the hook and shrugged into it, listening to the sound of his mother canceling the plumber as she bustled around her kitchen, covering plates and popping them into the oven to stay warm.

Keeping dinner ready for him.

Taking care of him.

So, he would take care of her. Always.

He would take care of all of them.Always.

Just like he’d promised his father.

He grabbed his keys, shoved his cell into his back pocket, and slipped out the front door, locking it behind him.

The trip to the store didn’t take long.

And it hardly took a minute to repair the water line, to stash the extra connectors he’d bought in case it happened again in his mom’s toolbox.

Throwing in the wet towels and starting the wash only took a few more seconds.

They needed to be washed.

Plus, he needed to test the lines, to make sure they weren’t leaking.

And if he moved them to the dryer before he went home after eating a delicious meal of meatloaf and mashed potatoes, then that was just because he was thoughtful and cared about her.

And if after he took care of the towels, he ignored the haunted look she gave him as he kissed her cheek and said goodbye…

It was only because he loved her.

Love was care.

Thoughtfulness.

Always.

Without exception.

They were eyeing her plate, and she knew the next comment was going to piss her off.

“I’m not that hungry,” she snapped, going on the offensive. “I told you that before we came here, if you remember?”

Herebeing a hamburger place they all loved—her included.

But the serving sizes were huge.
