Regret on her face.

Regret that had him moving closer, cupping her jaw. “No, it was the right thing to say. I needed to hear it. I just…” He inhaled and shook his head. “I just didn’t quite understand what it was going to make me ponder.” His eyes connected with hers. “I’m glad you told me,” he said again.

It was just that pretty much everything he was feeling and thinking had changed.

And the woman standing in front of him with her arms laden with bags was responsible for it.

But he didn’t tell her that.

Her brows dragged even closer together. “It wasn’t all you,” she said. “I mean, I don’t think we’d be good together because we want different things. But…that explosion.” A breath released slowly. “It came more from me.” Her voice dropped. “And from my own hang-ups, my own past.”

He wanted to dive in, to demand answers.

Show her you can learn, that you can see and understand her perspective.

He bit his tongue.

“I understand,” he said softly, though he couldn’t ignore the fact that she was carrying the bags, that they looked heavy, that he should be carrying them. “Really, I do.”

He bit the inside of his cheek, pushed down the urge to take the bags.

She didn’t want that.

More studying. More staring into his eyes as though she could see his soul.

Then, surprisingly, she smiled and lifted one arm.

“These are getting heavy, mind carrying them into the kitchen for me?”

Sixteen

Teresa

Stupid.

She’d fought him about taking care of her.

And now she’d let him carry the bags in, as though they were so heavy she couldn’t handle the weight. Probably undoing any progress he might have made.

Stupid.

It was just…he looked so unsure standing there, and a little sad.

And hehadn’tbeen pushy.

Not in that moment.

Not last night.

Woo-hoo! He’d acted like a normal human being for two whole nights in a row. Color him changed! Now it was time to throw herself naked on the altar of feminine sacrifice, her thighs falling right open so he could slip between them and fuck her senseless.

Right.

She might be losing it.

Too much socializing this week.

Too much of this man,anymen.
