Soft eyes and fingers and heart.

“Honey,” she whispered, sympathy in the endearment.

He felt that sympathy deep in his gut. “I know.”

“You’ll figure it out.”

“I know,” he murmured. “But maybe—”

Her breath seemed to catch in her lungs as she waited.

“Maybe I’ll figure it out sooner if…” he trailed off, wanting to ask, quite desperate for it, actually, but the words had clumped up in his throat, making it nearly impossible to get them out.

“If?” she prompted.

“If you help me.”

And then he got to see the most wonderful thing.

He got to see her smile.

“Okay,” she said the next evening. “I have a plan.”

He grinned at her, having opened the door wide, even though she hadn’t even made it all the way up to his porch.

“Yeah?” he asked, snagging the bag of takeout from her.

Something she didn’t protest.

Because he understood that he didn’t need to take over everything. Because he made it clear that he knew she was capable of taking care of her own shit.

Because he’d bit back his alpha-holeness and let her buy him dinner.

She grinned.

She’d underestimated him, and he’d shown her that he was so much more than she could ever hope for.

He’d asked her for help.

He’d been vulnerable.

He’dtalkedto her, didn’t just jump in and try to solve all of her problems.
