They both had, but about thirty minutes ago, her phone had chimed, and she’d gotten up, showered, and left.

A shower she hadn’t let him join in on, because she only had thirty minutes to clean up, dress, and get to the job site.

He’d retrieved her clothes.

She’d put the leggings back on—without underwear (which hadn’t much helped his control in not joining her in the shower)—and borrowed one of his T-shirts.

He needed to fuck her in that and nothing else.

He needed to fuck her a lot of ways—all of which he’d carefully made note of in his mind. Three years obsessed with her meant that he had lots of time to plan.

But…they had time.

And he thought that perhaps it was one of the few times he’d actually thought that.

Not rushing to the future and thinking about all the possibilities, about how everything might go wrong and planning all the things he should be prepared to do in every eventuality.

Instead, he was lying in bed, having just watched his woman walk out the door in his shirt. He was jobless. Maybe a bit aimless.

But not unhappy.

Which, he thought, was a bigger commentary on everything to date that had changed in his life thus far than anything else.

Grinning, he reached for the TV remote, intent on adding watching trashy morning TV on an aimless, jobless morning.

His cell rang.

He glared at it, annoyed, but set the remote down and reached for it, glancing at the screen to see the number.

Was he screening his calls?

Yes. Definitely.

But it wasn’t one of the lines from his old job. This was a number that was sort of familiar, which was what had him swiping his finger over the screen and putting it up to his ear.

“Hello, this is Jeremy.”

“Jeremy? This is Cheryl from Robotech. I wanted to reach out to you and tell you that I’m pleased we can offer you a position.”

She began listing off salary terms and compensation packages and, frankly, his eyes glazed over just a little bit.

It was a lot of money.

The terms were good.

He’d heard from more than one person that their experience working for Robotech was excellent.

But…none of it lit a fire under his ass.

None of what Cheryl was saying excited him.

Not in the least.

He bit back a sigh as she went on for the next couple of minutes, detailing next steps, and finishing with, “I’ll courier over the paperwork and written offer along with our welcome packet and a few other items. You can look it over and get back to me.”

Said with the confidence of a woman expecting a yes.

Along with sending a written offeranda welcome packet.
