“Tell me.”

He paces the floor, keeping his eyes off me.

“You really think I’d work for a bunch of fucking rapists if I didn’t have to?” he says, his voice low and accusing.

“I’d like to think no one condones that shit, but that isn’t the way the world works, and I hardly know you,” I reply. After a moment, I continue. “Why do you work for them, then? And don’t tell me it's because of your sister.”

He stops his pacing and looks at me. Something dark swims in his eyes and I won’t deny that it pulls me in,

“If I tell you, you can’t cut me out. I’m already risking enough for you. So if you want honesty, then it goes both ways. And whatever it is you’re up to? I’m in.”

I consider this. I’ve never really had a male partner before, hell, any partner really. While it really isn’t my style, the last few days have proved I’m not as part of this world as I once thought. I finally nod.

“But we do things my way.”

“If by your way you mean fucking and doing drugs with them, then no deal.”

I roll my eyes at him. “No, my way is not fucking them and doing drugs, asshole.”

I don’t elaborate further and his jaw ticks, but he nods.

“Okay, now tell me. Who are the Iron Elite? And why are you working for them?” I walk across the apartment and start digging around in the cupboards until I find a bottle of vodka in the freezer. I pull out two glasses and come back to the couch. He frowns at the bottle when he looks up, but doesn’t refuse when I hand him a glass.

“I don’t know everything,” he admits, “But I do know a few things. It’s a family sort of thing, something passed down to the sons. Masonic kind of concept, I think.”

“How big is it? I didn’t get the impression….”

“International,” he interrupts, “Massive, but so underground that few will know about it, even if they’re the ones pulling the strings.”

I let out a small laugh. “Sound a bit like a conspiracy theory like to me.”

Killian tilts his head in acknowledgement. “I can’t say it doesn’t,” he admits, “But it doesn’t make it less true.”

“So, this international boys’ club,” I continue, despite his eye rolling, “What do they do? Besides raping girls.”

Killian’s face loses all mirth. “It’s hardly something to joke about.”

I shrug. “If you can’t make light of fucked up shit then what the hell is the point?”

He gives me a flat look. “Well, I don’t know much, as I said, but you’re right, there is an initiation. I’d say your friend was a part of one for Neil and his boys.”

A flicker of my inner flame sends sparks through my body at hearing what I had long since guessed. A small smile plays on my lips, not betraying the rage I feel.

“What else?”

“They have their hand in a lot of things, I don’t really know what else I can tell you other than they’re big, organized, and Neil is the head of the local chapter.”

“Really?” I ask, perking up a touch. Killian nods.

“Eternity isn’t a meeting place or anything formal, either. They all hang out there, but I know they have another place somewhere else. I haven’t been able to figure out where.”

“And Neil runs the whole thing?”

“This area, anyway.”

“Hmm, he always was an alpha asshole, so that explains it,” I mutter in response, sitting back as I consider what he’s told me.

“It’s not a joke,” he replies with a frown, “He’s powerful, asshole or not, you shouldn’t underestimate him. Echo, you have to be careful with these guys.”
