“So, despite the fact that your plan is shit, or rather, nonexistent, you’re right that the only way that Neil and his boys will ever get what they deserve is if we deliver it.”

He stops, turning to step in front of me, gripping my arms and looking into my face.

“Echo, I want to help. You say you know more than I do? That you have a plan? That’s fine. I’m a big boy and have no problem with you taking the lead. But if we are going to do this, to really do this, then you need to be honest with me.”

I start to open my mouth, but he interrupts. “No bullshit.”

I close my mouth promptly.

He gives me a wry smile before stepping back beside me. We continue our walk in silence.

“It wasn’t my friend,” I spit out without thinking. Killian slows, watching me carefully. My voice is low as I continue.

“And I’ve worked in sex most of my adult life. I used my body for years to get what I wanted. Traveling the world, partying, fucking.” A small smile plays on my lips when I consider my old lifestyle. “Then one day, I picked the wrong marks.”

I see a variety of emotions warring on Killian’s face, ending on a grotesque recognition and judgement. My mind goes back to my first day, Neil taking me on that stage, and I have to look away.

“I fucked up in a lot of different ways, fucked over a lot of different people,” I admit. “But I never took anything that wasn’t given to me willingly. It just so happens I am also very, very good at convincing people.”

I pause.

“I’m not a good person. I won’t claim I am. But ever since that fucking day… it’s all I can think about. I can’t let it go, can’t let them get away with it.”

After a moment, Killian speaks.

“I had guessed that the whole ‘my friend’ thing was bullshit,” he admits.

I shrug again, and we continue to walk in silence. His reactions continue to surprise me, but it's refreshing somehow.

“Aren’t you going to tell me how sorry you are for me?” I finally ask and am rewarded with a smile.

“I could. But somehow I don’t think that’s what you want to hear.”

“It’s not,” I admit.

“So.”

I don’t know what to say to that.

“What did Neil say about Sergio?”

I frown when I think about the night before. I’ve put it out of my head, distracted as I’ve been today. I wonder what happened to the whore in the bathroom.

“You didn’t work last night,” I say needlessly.

“I do have nights off, you know,” he replies. “And don’t change the subject. What happened?”

I recall the events of the night with Krystal before, and I am a bit surprised to see the lack of surprise on Killian’s face. His jaw clenches and his fists tighten, but he doesn’t respond immediately.

“I don’t think he suspected anything, but fuck, Serg’s death fucked him up a bit,” I finish.

“Unfortunately, Neil pulling shit like that isn’t that unusual,” he replies with a sigh. “I keep a naloxone and first aid kit under the bar for that reason.”

I raise a brow. “What a fucker.”

Killian nods but doesn’t say anything for several minutes.

“We could just take the whole club down,” he says, “Burn it to the ground.”
