He nods in understanding before grabbing his phone. We’d both turned them off last night. As he scrolls,his agitation grows by the second.
“What is it?”
He mutters something I can't hear.
“What was—”
“Fuck!”
I jump at the sound, my eyes widening. Killian turns to me, regret and something else on his face.
“I’m so sorry, I have to go.”
I start a bit. “What? What do you mean ‘go’?”
He runs a hand through his hair, something I’ve come to recognize as a nervous tic. Frowning, I put a hand out on his arm to stop his movement.
“What was that message? What’s going on?”
He sighs. “I told you about my mom?”
I nod, recalling him saying his mom needed full-time care after what happened to Katrina. I can’t imagine what it must be like to still have family.
“Something happened at the home, it’s a few hours away and I can’t wait… I’ll be back tomorrow, but I can’t stay for tonight. Fuck, Echo, I’m so sorry but we need to wait.” The regret shines bright in his eyes along with worry.
I wonder what it’s like to care about your family. I push the thought aside.
“Why wait?” I reply simply. “Take care of your stuff. I can plant it tonight alone, that’s not an issue.”
He shakes his head. “No way, it’s too dangerous.”
I roll my eyes at him. “You do remember it was me with the plan to take them out in the first place, right? And I wasn’t really expecting a partner.”
His lips tighten. “I don’t like it.”
I smile, taking a step and placing a hand on his chest before leaning up to kiss him.
“Have I told you how cute it is that you worry about me?”
“I’m serious, Echo. What if one of them shows up? It’s too risky.”
“If one of them shows up, I take them down. I did train for that, you know.”
His jaw only clenches further.
“Seriously. You take care of your stuff, I’ll deal with it tonight. And tomorrow, we finish this.”
His eyes look deep into mine, searching.
“You’re a strong ass woman, you know that?”
I shrug. “Not really, but I am a motivated one. One way or another, Eternity is coming down.”
