May as well give up, the other voice says. You’re being fucking whored and trafficked, are you stupid?

“Fuck off,” I mutter to myself, very aware that the increased amount of talking to myself probably doesn’t bode well for my mental stability. Then again, none of this bodes well for me.

The door opens behind me. I try to turn my head to see, but Neil’s voice greets me almost immediately. A few other sets of footsteps follow.

My body is tense, wary as they come around to stand in front of me.

“You know, I can’t believe it took me so long to figure it out,” he says. “We have Tanner to thank for that.”

Tanner steps into my view and takes an exaggerated bow before pulling something small from his pocket. My eyes widen as I take in the bracelet they must have taken when they stripped me. My eyes dart to Neil. The knowing smirk on his face brings bile to my throat.

“It’s been a long time,” he says. “But how could we forget our first?”

Chapter Thirty

Under Pressure

Killian

It’s been thirty-six hours since Echo was supposed to leave to plant the bomb at Eternity, and I still haven’t found her. Caffeine brought clarity, and I find myself in front of an unassuming white house, watching and waiting. My body feels jittery and on edge, both from the energy drinks and the adrenaline.

Thankfully, Atlas helped as I hoped, and now it’s all up to me to convince one of Neil’s closest people to give him up so I can find Echo.

This is literally all I have left, apart from going in, guns a blazin’. Hopefully, it won’t come to that, but I’ll do what I have to.

A woman pulls up and gets out of her car. I immediately jump out and run after her.

“Dee,” I call out, jogging to catch up beside her. She turns, a look of confusion written on her face. “I know we haven’t talked a lot, but I’m—”

“I know who you are,” she interrupts, a hand going into her purse. “What do you want? Why are you here?”

I take a step back so as not to appear threatening, holding my hands up. As much as I don’t have time for this, I know the only way I’ll find out where Echo is, is through her. It took me a while to figure it out, but she’s my last option.

The one person I can get to who just might know where they are.

“I just want to talk, that’s all.”

“And why did you feel the need to follow me to my home?” I can feel the unease rolling off her and take a step forward, dropping my voice.

“Because I have questions for you, and they aren’t ones that you’d want to answer with an audience.”

Her teeth clench and she stares a moment before she nods sharply, inviting me inside.

As I enter, I’m surprised to see how simple and comfortable her place is. Simple furnishings cover the home, and a few high-end Burlesque pictures are the only thing adorning the walls. It somehow suits her.

She stands in the living room, arms crossed.

“So, what is so important you felt the need to follow me and disturb me at home?”

“Neil has Echo,” I tell her without preamble. Her brows furrow in confusion before a hint of recognition crosses her face, gone again in an instant.

“I’m quite sure any questions about other employees….”

I feel my face drop and she trails off, paling slightly.

“Enough of the bullshit, Dee,” my voice is low. “Echo went to Eternity the other night and never left. Where are they keeping her?”

She opens her mouth and I canseethe lies about to pour from her mouth. The fire in my belly erupts and my fist darts out, slamming into the wall.
