“The truth!” I shout. She swallows but stands straighter.

“I think you should leave. Now.”

We stare at each other for a moment and I consider my options.

I have no idea where Neil’s other buildings are, where Echo might be. I don’t know where else to look, who else to ask. The police can’t help me, but maybe I can convince Dee before it’s too late.

Please don’t be dead.

I push the voice from my mind.

I decide to go for a different approach.

“Do you remember Katrina?”

Dee looks taken aback by the change of questioning.

“I—Yes,” she replies.

“She was my sister,” I tell her. This time, I’m sure she pales. I take a step toward her, trying to keep my motions non-threatening. Dee watches me with unease.

“Katrina was a good girl,” I continue. “If you knew her at all, then you’d know that. She was sweet, kind.”

“I was sorry to hear of her passing,” she says, her words slow. “I—”

“Enough bullshit,” I say again, this time with no threat in my voice, just a heavy sadness. “You know what they did to Katrina. I don’t need your empty platitudes.”

I take a final step forward so we’re only a few feet apart.

“I think you know what they did to Katrina,” I tell her, my voice low. “You know that they—”

My voice cracks and I see Dee tremble. Clearing my throat, I get myself together.

“You know Echo doesn’t deserve it any more than Kat did. And the more time you hold me up, the less chance she’ll….” I swallow deeply, not willing to finish the thought. “Dee, tell me where they took her? Don’t let them ruin another one.”

The shaking under her skin is obvious now as she brings her eyes back up to mine.

“I can’t,” she replies, her voice barely above a whisper. Keeping my motions slow so as not to startle her, I put a hand out.

“Because of your husband?”

Her eyes widen and it would be comical if not for the situation.

“How’d you know? No one knows,” her voice shakes. The smile I give her is small, sad.

“I have connections too,” I say before dropping my voice. “I’m going to take them out. If you help me, you’ll never have to worry about Neil or the Iron Elite again.”

Her eyes shimmer with tears. “If they find out I helped you, they’ll kill him.”

I nod. “I know, that’s why they can’t find out. Come on, Dee. You want to be free? So does Echo. So did Katrina. Please. Help me.”

She exhales, rubbing the wetness from her face before raising it back to mine.

“Okay. I’ll help you.”
