But it could be better.

I didn’t know what I planned after all of this. After taking them all down. I suppose I always kind of knew I’d end up dead, but it wasn’t until recently I had a reason I wanted to keep going after.

The last decade—hell, my whole life—has been just getting by, taking the pleasure I could with no regard for others. I never really found someone I wanted to pleasure back, at least not untilhim.

I may have fucked up the first thirty years of my life, but I wish I had the chance to go back, to spend the next thirty laughing and fucking and loving.

Yes. That’s the one. I want tolove.

I feel wetness on my face, sounds of alarm in the distance.

I feel myself being lifted before the blackness overtakes me again.

Chapter Thirty-Six

Hallelujah

Echo

The smell of antiseptic is strong, but beneath it is a hint of something else. My eyes open and I have to squint against the brightness. My hand squeezes against something soft and I look over and see Killian watching me, eyes swimming with emotion. The corner of his mouth turns up.

“Hey, you,” he says, his voice soft. Mythroat feels like it’s full of cotton and I feel tubes on my face and around my nose.

“What happened?” I rasp.

His hand trails down my face and I lean into it, his touch warming me.

“They barely got you out,” he replies, his voice soft and brow knit with worry. “I was so fucking scared.”

His arms are around me before I can say anything and I inhale deeply, letting him envelope me. My body feels weak and I don’t think I could lift my arms if I wanted to, but at this moment, I feel safe.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt safe before.

I listen as he explains what happened, how the basement filled with smoke and didn’t burn.

“The air filter system,” he continues. “At first it did its job, kept fresh air coming in even while it burned above. Usually, concrete buildings are built to withstand fire, but Eternity wasn’t all concrete, just that extra basement.”

I frown. “Then why did the smoke….”

“Those air systems pull air from outside. It gets smoky enough outside where it pulls the air from….” he trails off and I nod in understanding.

“The other girls?”

The corner of his lip turns up, his expression lightening. “There were only two down there, they both got out.”

I lean back on my pillow and let out a breath before turning my eyes back to him. I feel tired, more exhausted than I’ve ever felt before. But I need to know.

“How did it happen? And what about—”

“Sssh,” he interrupts, “Do you trust me?”

I frown. “Well, yes, but—”

He leans down to kiss my forehead. “Then trust me to take care of you right now. And right now, you need rest. Then we can talk about the rest.”

Even as I try to object, I feel my eyes getting heavier and realize they’ve given me something. They’re almost closed, but I need to know.

“What about Neil?” I slur as sleep pulls me under. I hear the whisper of his voice before I do.
