“And I’d say sorry about what happened...last week, but somehow I don’t think you minded as much as you might have.” He gives me a wry look, and I feel my cheeks flush in turn.

“Thought so,” he mutters before sitting, and moving back on the bed so he’s spread across, leaning up on his elbow. He pats the spot beside him, nodding to the door.

“I can’t leave for a bit, and I won’t make you do shit, but at least we can be comfortable.”

I hesitate only a moment before shimmying up on the bed, conscious of the revealing skirt, though I suppose it’s a bit silly at this point.

I shift around until we are both laid out on the bed and propped on our elbows, facing one another. The bed is massive and only adds to how huge he looks.

We sit in silence for several minutes, and I think neither of us really knows what to say.

“Atlas?” I finally ask.

“Yea?” He shifts on the bed and I have to keep myself from rolling into him.

“Why did you come here today? Why are we here?”

He tenses, and for a moment, I don’t think he’s going to answer me.

“Depends who you ask,” he finally says. “If you’re asking me, then I already gave you the answer. I wanted to make sure you were okay. And don’t fucking ask me why I give a shit, okay? I already told ya, I won’t say that.”

“Who might you ask for a different opinion on why you’re here?” I query, picking up on the words he didn’t say. He hesitates.

“If you ask the men outside, they’d say I’m here to, ummm, utilize what they consider my property,” he says and his cheeks actually redden a touch, which surprises me. His answer doesn’t, though. Even I’m surprised at how calm I am.

“So, you’re here to have sex with your property,” I clarify, my voice monotonous. He narrows his eyes at me, leaning forward so his face is only inches from mine.

“I’m here to make sure that the woman other men think of as my property is safe,” he says firmly. Sighing, he moves back and lays on the bed and looks up.

“I told you, Kinsey, I won’t lie to you,” he says to the ceiling, before darting one side eye at me. “Though I can’t lie and say you aren’t the most tempting fucking thing I’ve ever seen, but that’s beside the point. I told you, I won’t fucking touch you, won’t hurt you. But those fuckers outside think something else is happening in here, so chill for a bit and I’ll be out of your hair.”

I feel myself blush at the strange compliment, but do lie back on the bed.

We sit in comfortable silence for several minutes before I ask the one thing I really want to know, yet am terrified to ask.

“Atlas?”

“Yes?”

“What’s going to happen to me?”

I don’t turn to him but feel his body tense beside me. He doesn’t answer immediately, and I feel my chest drop as I wait.

“As soon as I can, I’ll bring you out of here,” he begins, his voice even and steady, “I don’t think I can let you go home right away, it wouldn’t be safe and…there are other people, other factors at play. But I’ll make sure you’re safe, comfortable. I have friends that can help. Once everything settles, you’ll go back home and we’ll go our separate ways.”

He finally turns to me, sitting up on his elbow so he’s looking down at me.

“You mean…I won’t stay here? I-I’ll get to go home?” My voice cracks with hope.

He nods, a sad smile hidden on his lips. He runs one hand down my face before leaning down to kiss my forehead.

“Yes, Kinsey. I’ll get you home.”
