Page 82 of Her Last Audition

As much as I’m sure this girl doesn’t want to relive whatever Eli did to her friend, I owe it to Riot to find out. They cut off the outside use of the girls so this was the only way he could find out.

“She was taken about two weeks ago,” Reyne says, still giving me strange looks. I suppose whores aren’t used to questions asked when they aren’t on their backs.

“Taken? Not Killed?”

Reyne starts at that. “Killed? Oh my god, no, I hope not. Is she okay?”

I shake my head with a frown. “I don’t know. I came here to find out if she was dead. I heard something happened here last week…”

I trail off, and Reyne pales slightly, but nods, her head dropping.

“Jaime, she…umm…left before that.”

“Do you know where they took her?”

Reyne lets out a short laugh. “You think they tell us? No, they sold her, I assume.”

I give her another nod.

“Thank you, Reyne. I appreciate the information.”

She looks a little taken aback but nods as I step toward the door, stopping just shy of opening it.

“You…you knew Kinsey, didn’t you?”

I look over my shoulder, not further clarifying it.

I don’t want to get the girl’s hopes up, but I will talk to Ivor later about buying the girl, just like I did Kinsey.

I’ve done a lot of fucking awful things, fucked up in a lot of ways in life. Seeing the goodness in someone like Kinsey is inspiring, and if I can make up for any of the wrong I’ve done, I will. Even if it's starting as small as saving one whore.

I get back to the warehouse and head straight for my office where Riot is waiting. He stands, and I close the door behind me.

“What is it? Was it her?”

His entire body is taut with tension, and I shake my head.

“No, it wasn’t her that he killed.”

The man seems to deflate like a goddamn balloon, relief etched across his features.

“Did you get to see her? What did she say?” he asks excitedly, and I grimace, once more shaking my head.

“I’m sorry, man, she…”

“Knock, knock,” a voice says with a small knock.

“Come in.”

The door opens and Kinsey pokes her head in.

“Am I interrupting?” She is still covered in green and yellow bruises, and I feel myself tense with anger at the sight, though I keep my expression and voice as soft as I can.

“Come in, I was just telling Riot what I found out.” She nods and closes the door behind her, moving up to my side and putting her tiny arm around me. I immediately put mine over her shoulder, bringing her close. I feel calmer with her by my side.

“I was just saying, it wasn’t Jaime that was killed,” I continue, and Kinsey breathes a small sigh of relief.

“The other girls?” she asks.
