Prologue

Thiswaspurefuckinginsanity. When my father had told me I needed to transfer schools for a bit, I never imagined it would be at fucking Woodlands Academy Prep. It was the equivalent of walking into a snake’s den.

“Son, it’s what you need to do. Harmon gave the orders. This is what you’ve been trained for. Man up.”

My father knew best.

At least, that's what he kept instilling in me. On the plus side, no one knew me here – fuck, I might even have a bit of a fresh start.

Fuck’s sake, Levi. Hold your shit together. That’s not what you’re here for. This is only temporary for the next year.

I pushed my blonde hair back as I started walking towards the administration building. I couldn’t help feeling like I was the guinea pig being pushed into Spades Territory as a spy. I wasn’t stupid though. I knew that neither Harmon Hunter or my father gave two shits about me or my wellbeing. Frankly, if I was shot by Reed Xanderson, they’d shrug it off and send in another Hunter as a replacement. Butluckyme, I was just the same age as the suspicious chick in question.

The Hunters wanted me to keep an eye on and befriend some random teen girl. She was of high interest to us apparently. They hadn’t fully disclosed the situation yet other than I knew she was important, and they needed me to babysit her from a distance for a year.

A whole fucking year.

All my friends were at Argento, my old team, my now ex-girlfriend, Cami.

Seriously, did they have any idea what I had to give up for their stupid mission?

I shoved open the door to the administration office and smirked as the lady behind the counter let out a gasp as the handle hit the wall. Her brown eyes looked over me quickly in trepidation and I gave her one of my signature charming smirks, which saw her visibly relax. She was a cute thing – young, in her mid 20's with blonde hair. I'm not going to lie, she was hot and I would absolutely fuck her under normal circumstances.

“Hi,” I started as I leaned on the counter, holding her gaze. “I’m Levi Henderson.”

She gave me a small smile, her cheeks flustered as she tried to compose herself. "Are you new?"

"Yes, just transferred in today," I grinned, and she looked down, brushing her hair out of the way as she reached into her drawer.

Pulling out a bundle of documents, she quickly flicked through them before handing them over. "Everything you need is in here. Class schedules, maps, general information. But if you get stuck and need any help, you can come see me. I'm Bella."

"Thanks, Bella," I said, giving her a wink which darkened her cheeks further. "I'm sure I'll be seeing you around."

Heading out of the office, I heard her let out a shaky breath and I smirked. Girls were so easy to tame. I had put myself off limits for Cami, keen to keep up an appearance of solidarity for the sake of the Hunters but that didn't mean I hadn't railed my fair share of them. Cami was unfortunately a means to an end. She was another member's daughter and my father had insisted that if I was going to date, it be within our circle.

It wasn't all hard work though. Cami was gorgeous – long, wavy dark red hair, a nice rack and she was fun. I was loyal to her and never strayed in the short 6 months we dated, and I know she was annoyed when I broke up with her. But I couldn't be seen or known to be dating someone like her while I was at Woodlands. It was bad enough I was forced to go under my real name here. Like I said, my father didn't give a shit at all. If anything, part of me wondered if hewantedme to get caught. I wasn't exactly the heir he had wanted.

He was brutal, a fucking savage. I remember when I turned 13, he took me out to the woods, handed me a gun and demanded I turn it on a rogue member. The stupid piece of shit had betrayed Harmon so as an initiation of sorts to becoming a man, Harmon and my father figured the best way would be to have my first kill.

My first mistake was hesitating. And from then on, my father never looked at me the same. I could never be the same ruthless, cold-blooded killer he was. And for that, I was a fucking disappointment.

Unfortunately for him, I was his first and only born child. So he tolerated me, forcing me to do his bidding and punishing me when I didn't do it to his standards.

I did end up killing the guy in the woods, and for months it haunted me. I was forced to kill after that too, and each time it got a little easier. I guess they figured it was time to up the ante.

As I headed towards the main building housing the classrooms, I dug into my pocket, retracting my phone to pull up the picture of the suspect. Her name was Blair Fortin and to me she just looked like any other fucking naive teenage girl. I knew of her father, John. He worked in the DPP as a prosecutor. I suspected he might have been a bit shady but no one had confirmed otherwise so I could only chalk it up to the usual legal-asshole persona attorneys and prosecutors had.

My first plan was to find this Blair girl and start building the rapport up. My father wanted a report by the end of the week and judging by his comments before I left, he was not in the mood for unsatisfactory results.

The courtyard was full, students hanging around before the start of class. I found a spot in the shade, leaning against the stone building as I studied my new peers. They all looked wet behind the ears. It was hard to believe this was Spades Territory. I almost couldn't take it seriously. If this was their up and coming gang elite, then they should be worried.

I looked up as some football players started walking past, their dumbass expressions making it clear they had nothing in their heads except air. They were out of the usual academy uniform, instead wearing their team jerseys. For an academy, the quality here was certainly subpar.

I flagged them down, noting their annoyed sneer as they walked over.

"What?" snapped the tallest of the two. He was built as wide as he was tall, tanned with black short hair and grey eyes.

"You play?" I asked, nodding to their jersey, but my question gave no room for misinterpretation. I knew they played and my tone dared them to suggest otherwise.
