“Well, if it helps, I think I’ve nearly figured out who Blair’s long lost brother is,” Benny offered.

I looked up at him. “Really?”

He nodded. “But I’m not completely convinced my information is correct.”

“All your info has been on point at this stage, Benny. Why are you worried?”

Benny pursed his lips. “It says his name is Logan. He’d be around 34.”

“Okay?” I asked, confused. “I’m not following…”

He sighed, rubbing his temple. “This is where it gets confusing. The documents I’ve found have a last name. But, it can’t be accurate.”

“What’s the last name?” I replied, curious.

Benny looked up at me, biting his lip. “It’s Fortin.”

My mouth parted, words caught in my throat. “Wait… what?”

“Yeah… but that doesn’t make any sense, right? Because that was Blair’s surname because of John. But John isn’t her real father.”

I sat down on the edge of the bed, my fingers strumming along my knee. “Unless… unless, that’s why. He lived a double life up until Blair was 18. Which is when she’s eligible to inherit, right? What if he was just keeping an eye on her for his son? I don’t understand the connection but if they set to benefit from it, it would make sense.”

Benny at least had the nerve to look mortified. “So, Blair’s mother had an affair with a Spade, but potentially also with John Fortin? And both relationships resulted in children? I don’t blame her really… anyone is better than Harmon.”

“Yeah, well. That didn’t work out well for her,” I muttered. “He killed her anyway, and now the Hunters are going after her for money and revenge. It explains why the Spades are protecting her. She’s one of them by birth right.”

Benny snorted. “She’s a Hunter too. I guess the difference is, Hunters don’t give a fuck about family. Only power.”

“Yeah, family means fuck all,” I mumbled quietly.

The pieces were finally starting to fall into place. But it just meant that the Hunters would double up on their efforts, especially now that she had more protection. Blair had a target the size of Jupiter on her head. Given the Spades had been retaliating, taking out Hunter operations, they needed the cash.

It almost concreted my theory and concern that another attack was imminent. I needed to warn Blair.

“Get together what you have there. I need to drop it off to Blair. We need to warn them so they are prepared. The Hunters won’t let this rest.”

Benny nodded. “I’m on it. But Levi, have you thought about what will happen to us when all this is over?”

“Not really,” I admitted.

“The Hunters will kill us if they find out. And the Spades… they won’t take us. No way. Why would they? We’ll just be seen as traitors.”

I felt bad for dragging him into this, but at the same time, I was so grateful for his loyalty. “I know. Maybe we can skip town… start fresh somewhere.”

Benny laughed, whipping out a cigarette. “Sure, bro. We can dream.”

It was here.

Fucking graduation.

I honestly couldn’t have given two shits about it, but for some reason, Benny was insistent on me going.

“Come on, bro. It’s a rite of passage. You should be proud that you got here, especially with everything that has happened. Go and celebrate.”

“There’s nothing to celebrate,” I grumbled.

Benny rolled his eyes. “Sure there is. And you know what? Quinn would want you to celebrate. She wouldn’t want you sitting here, sulking. Put on your fancy ass gown, get your cheap piece of paper and then we’ll get shit faced.”
