Page 80 of Monstrous Truths

“Cut the shit,” I snap, “and tell me what is going on. How can I help with this research if I don’t know?” The words are bitter in my mouth.

“I knew you couldn’t resist the challenge.” He chuckles and sits, observing me curiously for a moment before nodding as if coming to a decision. “I suppose it won’t hurt. It’s not like you are ever getting out of here, and you are brilliant, so you might spot something we did not. Plus, you have a unique perspective.” He smirks. “No others have survived the change yet.”

“Others?” I prompt.

He hums. “Maybe I should start at the beginning.”

“That would be good,” I retort.

“Well, you know we made them.” He doesn’t hide it nor seem embarrassed. “It was very inconvenient when they got their own minds and started a war. We tried to conduct the same research here, but some of the original scientists died in the labs and we didn’t have time to get their research, so we have been guessing. You met the splice. That was an attempt to create a stronger, more obedient version. There have been others, nothing too impressive, until a team suggested a baby would be the best way to move forward. It seems human genes and monster genes are compatible, and there’s a theory that their offspring would be the best of both species, so of course we wanted to explore that. It seemed, however, that forcing matings didn’t work, and the offspring didn’t survive long, if at all. There was a theory that it had to be from a bonded, mated pair—strange, I know—and the person’s blood had to be compatible. You had your blood taken when we first employed you—a surprise, let me tell you, when we realised you were compatible. We hired you because your parents were some of the most amazing minds of our time.”

The mention of my parents makes me snarl, but I bite it back since I’m getting what I want.

“So imagine our surprise when their child is also a brilliant scientist and her blood is compatible. We tried to find ways to induce you into a mating, but many suggested it needed to be natural, so we sent you over the wall. We do need the research, but we thought that was the best way to get it and the results we needed. Only you had not mated. Bonded, sure, we saw the changes in your blood, but not enough.”

“So you tried to force me.”

“And then you did it all by yourself. Good girl.” He smirks. “So now you will start to change and adapt, sharing their qualities to prepare for offspring…or that is the theory at least.”

“Change how?” I demand.

“We don’t know for sure. Some are guessing the basics, such as healing, strength, and speed—all the better to protect the baby. But we will find out with you.” He smiles. “We are going to do amazing things together, you and me. Just think of it.”

“I’d rather not,” I sneer, and he narrows his eyes.

“We have tried other ways. Trust me, if we didn’t need you, you’d be gone already. Remember that,” he hisses.

“Other ways?” I ask as a bad feeling starts to coil within my stomach.

“We tried other ways of adapting humans to accept monster matings.” He shrugs. “Such as starting them young before their bodies are fully developed.”

“Kids,” I whisper.

“Kids, but not ones anyone cared about.”

I gasp. “The kids…they aren’t getting sick from the food.”

“Oh, they are. There are drugs in them.” He shrugs. “Who better to experiment on than those who do not matter?”

“You fucking bastard!” I fling myself at him, but guards grab me and hold me back as he tuts.

“Really, Talia, can’t you see all the good we are doing?”

I snarl at him, vindictiveness entering my tone. “No, but you are wrong.”

“About?” he asks curiously.

“I can’t be what you need because I can’t have kids.”

The slow smile he gives me makes me shiver. “Yes you can, Talia. Between the changes in your blood from the bonding and the drugs we had been giving you every day you worked here, you can have kids and you will.”

I gape in shock before I launch myself at him again.

He made me into a lab rat.

“Now, now, that’s no way to act. I think you need some time alone, so get back to work, and if you’re a good girl, we will put you back in with our monster. If not, we will kill him. After all, he’s done his job now.”

I freeze as terror fills me.
