They will kill Cato.

I have to keep him alive.

“Good girl. Get back to work.”

FORTY-FOUR

TALIA

What Hayes told me has me filling in missing pieces. Upstairs is a breeding farm—that’s why they have captured and experimented on monsters. It’s clear it’s not just to create more of the same, but to create different ones.

A new species.

It’s also more than that. They want to change us, change humans, so no one is safe anymore. I stash as much research away as I can, knowing we’ll need to get out of here soon. It won’t be long before they will hurt Cato to get me to do something, and I can only imagine what Aria and Akuji are going through. We need to get back over the wall, where they have no power.

We need to destroy their research once and for all, but that won’t stop them. No, now we need to destroy them. To do that, however, I still need to understand the origins. Some of the research makes no sense to me, and I start to get frustrated, knowing I need to unlock its secrets so I can protect my people.

My people…

Is that what they are now?

Yes, I decide they are.

“Come on, scientist. Time for your check-up,” a guard barks sometime later.

“Check-up?” I question, but he ignores me, and an idea sparks in my head. “Fine, one moment.” I grab as much as I can, stuff it into a bag, and hoist it over my shoulder.

“What’s in the bag?” one asks.

“It’s to run some tests on Cato, the monster I share a cell with. Hayes wants me to understand this process, so I need these,” I explain.

He seems torn, so I sweeten the pot.

“Do you really want to bother the boss to confirm what I’m saying? What else am I going to do with it?” I gesture around us. “It’s not like there’s anywhere to go.”

“Fine,” he mutters, and he, along with another guard, lead me back through the labs to a completely different one. This one more looks like a doctor’s office, with a table and cupboards along the back wall, and a bad feeling starts inside of me as I look around. “What’s going on?” I query, placing the bag under the metal bed so they will forget about it.

“Get on,” the guard demands.

Swallowing my protests in case they take it out on Cato, I do as I’m told, and once there, I have to wait and wonder what they are going to do to me. They need me alive, but it’s clear they only want me for my brain and womb. Everything else? Well, it doesn’t matter.

I wait and wait, and finally, a man in a lab coat scurries in. He doesn’t even look at me as he moves to a tray and pulls it closer. I frown as he draws blood and then checks me over. When he forces my thighs open and checks my vagina without gloves, I almost kick him in the face.

Instead, tears fill my eyes.

I want to scrub them away as they flow down my cheeks like hot trails of embarrassment. He doesn’t care. He treats me like an animal as he scans me and conducts test after test, all while the guard watches on, only heightening my embarrassment and fear.

“Undress her,” the man orders, and the guard grins wider.

“With pleasure.”

“Wait, no!” I protest, leaping up.

The doctor frowns at me. “I must check every inch of you, so either he undresses you or you will undress yourself. Otherwise, we will knock you out and undress you.”

I almost vomit at the idea, knowing they could do anything. Fear pounds through me so hard, my hands shake and legs turn to jelly as they tremble. The guard advances on me, ripping at my clothes as I yell and push him back, scrambling away.

“Now!” the doctor orders. “We don’t have all day.”
