Page 96 of Monstrous Truths

“I’m pregnant,” I blurt out. His eyes widen, and I start to ramble. “I wasn’t sure, but I missed my period a lot, and I was sick, and then the cravings—”

His lips cover mine before he pulls back with a grin. “You’re sure?”

“I’m sure,” I whisper. “We are going to have a baby. I didn’t think I ever would, Cato. I don’t care who made this happen, but we are going to be parents. We are going to have a family.”

He leaps to his feet, whooping, and I fall back with a giggle.

“I’m guessing you’re happy?”

“Happy?” He grabs me and tugs me to my feet, kissing me hard. “You gave me the best gift in the world when you agreed to be my mate, and now you’re telling me we are starting our own family?” His eyes shine bright as his hand covers my stomach. “I couldn’t even put into words how happy I am.”

“But the war, the experiments—”

“Doesn’t matter. There’s never a good time to have a baby, but it will be so loved, so protected. It will wish for nothing…unless you don’t want this?” he asks suddenly.

“I want this,” I reply automatically, covering his hand with mine. I never thought I would have kids, so all I wanted was to work, but with Cato? The idea of a family is almost a need I can’t control, and when I saw the tenth test saying positive, I knew I was happy—worried but so happy.

I cried, and Aria panicked and slapped me.

“I’m going to be a dad!” he yells, and everyone looks at us. “We are having a baby!”

Cheers and roars go up, and Aria toasts me from the other side of the room with a smirk on her lips. Akuji grins at us as drinks get passed around and everyone congratulates us. Laughing and grinning widely, I can’t help but wonder what kind of world my child will be born into or what they will be. My perfect rainbow baby, the one I never thought I could have.

But it doesn’t matter. Cato is right—it will be so loved, unlike most of us over that wall.

Here, in the forgotten city, I found my happiness, my future, my destiny, and my family.

One I always needed.

No matter what is to come, the truth is out now, and one thing’s for certain—we won’t do this alone.

For a moment, I swear I hear a roar of fury shaking under our feet, but I soon forget about it as my mate kisses me.

TALIA

“Ihate being pregnant,” I whine.

Cato grins, sliding his hands around my waist, but I slap them away.

“No touchy. This is your magic penis’ fault anyway.”

“Tally.” He pouts. “I know how to make it better.”

“You know how to stop me from almost pissing myself and eating everything in sight?” I narrow my eyes, knowing I’m being unreasonable. I would take all the downsides in a heartbeat to have this child—a child I’ve always wanted and never thought I could have. It doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to complain though.

“You are perfect.” He grins, uncaring about my irritable mood. I soften when he cups my face and kisses me, and when he crouches, I sigh, softening further for my amazing mate. His hand covers my round stomach as he presses his lips there. “Your mother is having a bad day. Be a good boy for me and take it easy on her, okay, bud?”

“It could be a girl,” I retort for the hundredth time—an argument we never get sick of.

He grins up at me, his fangs turning me on instantly. He knows it, and his grin stretches, the bastard. We’ve been inseparable, and our appetites for each other even scare the monsters here. One look from him, and I’m wet, which he loves. “Then it would be an incredible little girl, taking after her amazing mother.”

“Sweet talker.” I huff. “You’re still not getting your dick anywhere near me today.”

“How about my tongue then?” He wiggles his eyebrows, and I laugh just like he knew I would, but it ends in a gasp when our baby kicks. Cato feels it, and I press my hands over his as tears fill my eyes.

“You are going to be the best mother,” he whispers, looking at me.
