“Then what the hell are you privy to?” I asked, managing to keep all emotion out of my voice.

He pulled out another cigarette, a sign he was uncertain how much he wanted to divulge. “These people I mentioned are nothing but thugs, prepared to eliminate various powers in question in whatever manner they see fit. They will obtain the necessary means no matter what is required, including enacting business on American soil if necessary. They are concerned about the upcoming election. And I assure you they will use every method available to gain power.”

Which meant if this unknown party gained control of the technology, they’d have no reason to avoid starting an international incident. But without it, they were mostly powerless.

There was a shift in his demeanor. While it was subtle, it provided a reason why he’d agreed to the meeting in the first place. “Allow me to make a calculated guess. The people you work for have issues allowing this new power to grab control, fearful their happy lives will be disrupted.”

Snorting, I caught a slight smile crossing his face even in the dim lighting. “Your friend said you were… extraordinary.”

I laughed openly. “And allow me another educated guess. The same people you work for are prepared to handle the elimination of certain individuals now that you are certain they have yet to get their hands on the technology.”

He lifted his head, finally walking closer. “You have a full understanding of the issue at hand. Does the woman control the intellectual knowledge at this time?”

“Yes, and it’s safe.”

“Then you must protect her with your life.”

“That’s what I intend on doing. Any timeline established?”

He offered a toothy grin, puffing smoke in my face. “Very soon, my American friend.”

“How did this particular party become aware of the new technology?”

“I do not have a name, but it is someone in a controlling yet off the grid environment.”

The man was speaking riddles. “Understood.” Bullshit. I had no idea what the fuck he was talking about, but I doubted I’d get any additional information from him.

“I hope you do. While I have no love for Americans, have your new president protected at all times.”

There wasn’t a country in the world who didn’t anticipate Frederick Adams winning the election. “Also understood. How will I know when your… mission has been accomplished?”

His grin returned and he tossed his smoke, this time grinding it out with the ball of his foot. “You’ll know. I assure you that you will know.” As he moved around me, I turned to study him, thinking about what he said.

“Vy dolzhny boyat’sya morskikh pekhotintsev, potomu chto u nikh yest’ glaza na zatylke.”

You should fear the Marines for they have eyes in the backs of their heads.

After issuing the words, he stopped short, turning around to face me once again.

“Ya zapomnyu eto.”

I will keep that in mind.

As he walked into the darkness, I took a deep breath. I only hoped the Russian assassin held up his end of the bargain. If not, the new party would pick apart the world bit by bit.

I stood in the living room, staring out the set of doors at the darkened sky. A small storm had swept in, lightning still flashing in the distance. As soon as I heard footsteps I bristled, although there was no need. Jeremy’s request for help had proven to be beneficial on both sides.

He said nothing as he came into the room, moving behind me toward the bar. I hadn’t bothered to make another drink after our return, the desire to remain alert strong.

Seconds later, he flanked my side, staring out at the same spot in the sky.

An awkward few minutes passed.

“I did some additional digging on Isabella and her entire family,” he said quietly.

“Meaning what?”
