I nodded and rushed out of the room. If we didn’t find Miranda fast, I hated to think what that asshole might do to her.

CANDLES ILLUMINATED THE small shack, and romantic music played as I poured the wine. A devious smile stretched across my face as I pulled the vial out of my pocket and sprinkled a little white powder into the glass. I stirred it with my pinky, then sucked it dry.

Miranda would be mine after tonight.

I placed a single long-stemmed red rose on her plate and spun around in a circle. I could dazzle her with smooth Fred Astaire moves. William—fucking—St. James III had nothing on me. Miranda would learn that firsthand shortly.

“Everything is almost ready for you, Mousy,” I called to her. “Prepare to be romanced.” I grinned, rubbing my aching dick.

Soon my dream of having Miranda would come true. I might have lost all the money because of fucking Will, but I got the girl.

The asshole had one-upped me. Once again, I was poorer than dirt. But I had the grand prize: Will’s most valuable, priceless possession, Miss Miranda Bradford. I was willing to bet he’d pay one hundred million to get her back in one piece—the sucker.

No woman was worth that much, not even the fair and beautiful Miranda.

I’d been patient as I waited to get my hands on her, and now I’d be rewarded. Will had said he didn’t care about money. He was full of shit. Nothing was more important than money, but I would find out what was so fucking special about Miranda. She meant everything to Will, and I took her away from him. I was pretty damn proud of myself.

And I’d never let Miranda go.

If I couldn’t have her, nobody would.

The thought of losing her now that I had her fired me up. I grabbed the carving knife on the table and sneered as I stabbed the roasted chicken as if it were Will’s heart.

“You’ll never have her. Never!”

Everything Will valued and loved would be mine, finally. After living in Will’s shadow, it was my turn to shine. My turn to be top dog. My turn to be a respected, admired man every woman desired.

Whimpering from the closet stopped my train of thought.

She’s awake.

I crept over to the door and pressed my ear against it to listen.

Her soft cries touched a piece of my heart I didn’t know existed. In her groggy state, Miranda’s murmurs made her sound vulnerable, unlike the sassy, confident woman she’d been the other times I’d seen her.

I think I liked the scared, weak Miranda better. My little frightened Mousy.

“Hello? Is anyone there? Please let me out. I… I don’t know what you want with me or who you are, but this must all be a mistake. Just let me go. I won’t breathe a word of this to anyone.” A thud rattled the door. Then another and another. “Is anyone out there?”

My jaw tensed at what sounded like a kick on the door. Each thump increased my aggravation. Each time I imagined her foot slamming against the wood, I wanted to subdue her any way I could.

I stepped away without saying a word. I had to finish preparing dinner and needed to avoid the noise coming from the closet.

Harming Miranda wasn’t my intention, but if she pushed me hard enough, I just might lose control.

If I lost control, I wouldn’t be responsible for my actions.

Miranda would get what was coming to her, just like Will.

MY HEAD FELT heavy as it swayed from side to side. Foggy and confused, I couldn’t remember what happened, nor could I open my eyes. Where was I?

Forcing myself to think, I tried to recall the last thing I could remember.

I was at home with Norris.
