MIRANDA AND I were snuggling on the sofa. I’d been waiting for the perfect moment to ask about her agreeable attitude. Now seemed like a good time, then I could tell her when we were getting married. I was sure she’d be thrilled.

“Baby?”

“Hmm?”

“I’ve noticed over the last couple of weeks, you’re different.”

“Different how?” She worried her bottom lip between her teeth and furrowed her brow.

“Like this.” I ran my thumb across her mouth, so she’d release her lip. “You’ve been more agreeable than I’m used to. Submissive even. What’s going on?”

“I don’t see anything wrong. I just want to make you happy.”

“You do make me happy.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I want the old M back. I want my girl who took charge and didn’t let me talk her out of chicken or steak, a rom-com or action movie. Lately, you’ve been giving in to whatever I want.”

“And that’s a bad thing?”

“Yes!” I tucked her into my side and lifted her chin, so her gorgeous ocean-blue eyes met mine. “Talk to me, M.”

Her fingers brushed over my chest. I could tell she was stalling, but I didn’t press her. Miranda would talk when ready.

“I feel guilty for ever doubting you. I should’ve trusted you, but I ran away. I carry a lot of guilt over how I handled everything… and about Derek.” A tear slipped down her cheek. “I just want to make it up to you.”

My chest burned with my own guilt for everything that had happened. “I love you, M. So damn much. But, baby, you have nothing to be guilty about. I’m not upset with you.”

“But I hurt you. I crushed you when you found me gone.”

She wasn’t wrong. I was devastated and nearly went out of my mind worrying about her. But still, I didn’t want her to live with guilt.

“I was crushed but rightly so. I deserved it, M. You believed I had an affair and were trying to protect yourself and the baby.”

She shook her head. “I shouldn’t have doubted your love for me though.”

“You saw me kiss Cori. That was real.”

She screwed up her face. “Don’t remind me.”

“See? You wouldn’t feel that way if it wasn’t real to you.”

“I guess you’re right.”

“I am. Let’s put it all behind us. From here on out, let’s be completely devoted and faithful to each other. No lies. No secrets.” I rubbed her stomach. “We’re bound by love.”

Her eyes shimmered like sapphires. “Deal.” She puckered her lips, and I accepted the invitation.

“So, you bought your dress. Isn’t that the most important part for the bride?”

She bobbed her head. “Yup.”

“Let’s get married next Friday.”

Her eyes went wide. “What? That’s too soon. You can’t just throw together a wedding. Trust me, I’d know. Wedding planner”—she pointed to her chest—“remember?”

A boisterous laugh flowed out of me. “Oh, I remember, all right. All those late nights and six-day workweeks.”
