Nothing.

Dammit, I couldn’t let her get to me, but it was too late. Simone was deep under my skin.

I stalked over to her. “Did you hear me? I’ll be back in a few hours.”

Nothing.

“I’m sorry.” An apology from me was unprecedented. Then I took it a step further and kissed the top of her head. She didn’t jerk away or look at me. It was as if I didn’t even exist to her, and it cut me deep. “Okay… I’ll see you.” I quickly left before I dropped onto my knees and groveled for her forgiveness like a weak-ass pussy.

9 Simone

IT TOOK EVERYTHING in me to not look at Axel for the last hour or so. But when my groceries were delivered and he answered the door, I cut my eyes to his backside and cursed myself for still wanting him after he humiliated me in the bathroom.

Humiliated was how I felt after he kissed me like a starved man, arousing me to the point I nearly came when he sucked on my nipple. But then he questioned if I wanted him multiple times. I’d admitted I did, offering myself to him, and he just left me. God, it hurt. I didn’t care if he was getting me back for teasing him with my naked body. His rejection stung, and now, I had nothing to say to him. Axel Pérez was nothing to me.

Even so, I could admire a handsome man from afar.

Out of the corner of my eye, I could see him putting stuff away. It was like he knew where everything went, which was weird. Maybe he was only guessing. I didn’t have a lot of food in my kitchen cabinets, so really, he could put my groceries anywhere, and it would be fine.

“I need to go out for a little while. Do you want me to pick anything up while I’m out?”

My whole body tensed, but I kept my eyes on my book. I wasn’t surprised Axel was leaving, but it didn’t make sense if he was supposed to be my full-time bodyguard. Whatever.

“Okay. If you need anything, text me.”

Right, as if I would ever ask him for anything ever again. Nope. Not happening.

My pulse kicked up as he approached me.

“Did you hear me? I’ll be back in a few hours.”

Why did he even care? I swear I did not want him in my house, but I was done arguing with him. The man was confusing as all get-out.

“I’m sorry.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Axel didn’t seem like the kind of person who apologized for anything. Holy shit! He pressed a kiss to my head.

“Okay… I’ll see you.” He was out the door seconds later.

I exhaled and dropped my head back on the chair. I hadn’t realized I was holding my breath. Why would he kiss me after being a total dick? This man was confusing as hell.

Well, okay. Now what? Axel said he would be back, but he didn’t need to return. I felt safe with Darwin and Jones. York had told me having someone inside my loft added a third level of protection. He made me feel like whoever was stalking me was dangerous. But if that were true, wouldn’t they have tried to get me by now?

God, I wished I could attend a yoga class. I was never good at watching videos. I needed the instructor hovering over my shoulder and guiding me through each pose. Or when I was doing core exercises, I needed my trainer pushing me to hold for one more second. And just one more. I kept my body in shape because it was expected of me, but I had little interest in physical fitness.

I reached for my cell phone, found Lily’s number, and pushed the call button. She answered on the first ring.

“Girl, are you okay? I haven’t wanted to bother you, but I’ve been going out of my mind with worry. Miranda told me you stayed at the mansion last night but were gone this morning. You poor thing. I know how you hate staying at your folks’ place. Are you okay?”

Lily was just the person I needed to talk to. Or rather listen to. She could ramble all day long. I wouldn’t have to say a word for us to have a conversation. I loved my friend dearly.

“I’m okay.”

“You don’t sound like it. Shit, Simone, a stalker?”

“Yeah. I can’t believe it myself.”

“Well, good thing you have that sexy beast of a man protecting you. Miranda told me Axel has been doing double duty taking care of their estate and your loft. She said he’s your full-time bodyguard. Lucky you.”
