I groaned, standing up. I needed gelato. “I’m not so lucky. I don’t even want Axel in my home.”

“What? I was sure you’d be thrilled to have him with you twenty-four seven. What happened?”

Absolutely nothing.

“He’s an asshole. That’s all.”

“Hmm. Not a word I’d call him after the way he held you at the party.”

“Well, you weren’t around when he made me leave with my parents and refused to come with me when I asked him to. Or when he went to the mansion last night and forced me to stay there, promising he’d bring me home in a day or two. Or how he rejected me—” Oops. I hadn’t meant to tell anyone about Axel’s rejection.

“Hold up. Finish what you were going to say. Axel rejected you how?”

“Doesn’t matter. He’s an asshole, and I don’t want him anywhere near me.”

“Nuh-uh. Spill it, chica. I know something is going on between you two. Just admit it, for Christ’s sake. We all see it in the way you both look at each other.”

“See what?”

“Desire.”

I laughed as I removed the lid on the pint and grabbed a spoon. “You mistake desire for hatred.” I scooped out a large bite and savored the first spoonful.

“No, I’m pretty sure the electricity in the room when you’re both present is desire, passion, and yearning.”

“Hmm. So then the same electricity you and Henry created last Easter.” Dammit, that was a cheap shot.

“You’re such a bitch. Bringing him up when you know how he broke my heart.”

I pinched my face tight, hating myself for going there with Lily. “I am a bitch. I am so sorry. That was low.”

“No need to apologize. I get it. Your life is a scary mess.”

“It is. I’m in such a bad place right now with everything going on. I need to relax, but I can’t. I’m holed up in my loft until God knows when. Do you want to come over?”

“Sure, babe. I’ll come over. Want me to bring you anything?”

I thought for a minute. My initial reaction was to load up on junk food and carbs but my trainer would not be happy. Maybe I should have him over instead.

“No. I think I’ll have Corbin drop by.”

“Your trainer? Yes, ma’am. I’m down for watching him flex his tight ass.”

I giggled. “Well, you can look but no touching. He’s notthatinto girls, ya know.”

“Yeah, I know. But I can still drool over him. I’ll see you in an hour.”

“Perfect.”

Lily ended the call, and for the first time all day, I had a reason to smile. I went to the door and knocked. It opened and both my guards had expectant expressions on their faces.

“Hey. Lily will be over in an hour. And probably Corbin too.”

The men furrowed their brows.

“Corbin isn’t on the approved list, miss.”

I screwed up my face. “Jones, he’s my personal trainer. Has been for three years. He was vetted for some strange reason last spring when all the crap with the breach happened.”
