“What about your bag?”

“Sean already got it.”

I helped her stand and hugged her. “You’re amazing. You’ve handled everything while in labor.”

She laughed. “This is the easy part. Prepare for some screaming and hand squeezing. Let’s go.”

“I’m ready. I can’t wait to meet our little princess.” I helped Miranda to the car, my eyes on the ambulance. I needed to get word to Axel and my dad. “By the way, did you—”

“Yes, I called Claire. She’ll meet us at the hospital. I also called my parents, Lily, and Tessa. I even called Henry.”

“Damn, you’re more than amazing. You’re stupendous.”

She giggled as I strapped her into the back seat. “Don’t make me laugh. Amniotic fluid is dripping out of me enough as it is.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Yikes. Okay.” I guessed that explained the towels on the leather seat. I shut the door and ran to the other side to sit in the back with Miranda. Sean drove off while I buckled my seatbelt.

“Text Axel or call him. He needs to know what happened.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

26 Axel

“AXEL. AXEL, WAKE up.” My arm was nudged. I miraculously had fallen asleep. “It’s Will on the phone. Simone fell.”

My eyes flashed open. Mr. St. James shoved a phone in my face. “Will?”

“Hey, first off, she’s going to be okay.”

“What happened? Where is she?” My blood pressure instantly spiked.

“She’s in the ambulance.”

“Fuck.”

“But she’ll be okay.”

“What happened, Will?” I gritted out. I hated to dance around about shit. I wanted to get to the details.

“She was at my place going down the stairs, then Miranda yelled about her water breaking, Simone’s heel snapped and she tumbled all the way down.”

“Jesus Christ. And where were you? I told you to take care of her.”

“I wasn’t even at the house when this happened.”

“How is she?”

“She has a nasty gash on the back of her head, probably a concussion and maybe a broken leg.”

I felt like I might explode. With my free hand, I gripped the arm of the chair and squeezed it.

I cut my eyes to Mr. St. James. His steely gaze was on me.

“We’re not turning the plane around,” he said as if he read my mind. “Her injuries are not life-threatening. I already talked to Will. You’ll see her when we get back in the morning.”

Ifwe get back in the morning.

“That’s not good enough.”
