A year ago, she started asking questions about her daddy. Where was he? When would he come back for her? I avoided answering her because it broke my heart to tell her the truth.

Then one day, she got it in her head that he was on a secret mission, like an undercover agent. My sweet girl had created her own daddy out of thin air. He was tall and funny, had temporary tattoos to hide his real identity, was stronger than Thor, and rode a Ducati motorcycle like the Green Arrow. Clearly, I shouldn’t have let her watch TV with me.

I jerked myself back to the present. “What in the hell does that mean? You know everything about us?”

“I monitor what you do. Keep tabs on Sadie.”

“You monitor us? How?” Goose bumps sprouted on my arms. I didn’t even know what else to say to him.

“Doesn’t matter. You can quit. But you’ll be back.” He said it so confidently it made my stomach queasy.

“I won’t be back.”

“You seem to have forgotten who I am in this city. I promise you, no one will hire you.”

I vaulted out of my chair. “You son of a bitch! You don’t control me!” I heaved in air, my mind racing with what to do.

Don’t give up, Jaynee.

“Oh, baby. I always have controlled you. You just thought you were an independent woman. I’ll give you props though, you never gave up on your college dreams. You did it. Graduated. I really didn’t think you would.”

“You are a fucking asshole. Why are you doing this? You don’t want Sadie or me. Why do you care what I do?” Not that I wanted to be with Richard. I didn’t. For Sadie, I’d hoped he’d have a real relationship with her. Be the father she deserved.

“Money,Dolly. You put my topless bar on the map, baby.”

“I’m more than a pretty face and a big set of tits.” I fought tears burning behind my eyes.

“Not to me. My business is booming because of you. We can revisit this discussion in a few years. Or if someone else comes along and steals the show. Until then, you work for me.”

I was speechless. My gut instinct told me to take my daughter and get out of this city. I just wasn’t sure where to go.

“What are you thinking?”

I flicked my gaze at him. “That I hate you.”

He stood and came to me. “You’re just angry.” He reached for me, but I stepped back.

“No. I’m going home.” I turned on my heel.

“Jaynee?”

I stopped at the threshold of the door, keeping my back to him.

“I’ll see you Monday for the weekly meeting,Dolly.”

The fuck you will.

I stormed out of Richard’s office, collected my tips from the stage manager and my shit from the dressing room, and left.

Had Richard always been an asshole? I knew not to expect anything from him regarding Sadie. It didn’t bother me because she was mine.

His threats of no one hiring me in Vegas and knowing everything I did had blindsided me.

Did he also know when I used my vibrator? Had a random hook-up?

Holy hell, it creeped me out.

On my way home, I called the one person I was sure Richard didn’t know. Or hoped he didn’t.
