“Jaynee, is everything okay?” Lisa mumbled, sounding groggy.

Oh crap!

“Lisa, I’m so sorry. I just realized it’s after two in the morning where you live.”Way to be inconsiderate, Jaynee.

“Hey, don’t worry about it. Are you okay?”

“I have to get out of Vegas.”

Lisa yawned into my ear. “You always say that.”

“This time, I mean it. How do you like Minnesota?” I took in the bright lights of the casinos and hotels on The Strip in my rearview mirror. I’d lived here my whole life, but I was sure I wouldn’t miss it.

“Are you seriously thinking of coming here? You hate the cold.”

She wasn’t wrong about that. I shivered when the temperature dropped below sixty degrees.

“I hate Richard more. I need to get Sadie out of here. She wants to be a topless dancer like her mommy.”

“Oh, Jaynee. I’m sure her saying that is only a phase. How’d she even find out?”

“Richard texted me a clip from one of my performances. Sadie was playing on my phone when it came in.”

“Dang, what luck.”

“Yeah. Not my finest moment. So...” It was horrible to impose on Lisa. We weren’t exactly best friends. We had an economics class together. Met for lunch regularly. Lisa knew all about my situation at Dirty Dick’s. After graduation, she’d gotten a job in Minneapolis, while I never got called for a single interview.

Freaking Richard. Did he have that much power in Las Vegas?

“Come to Minnesota. I have a spare room.”

“Lisa, you’re the best. Is tomorrow too soon?” I parked my car, got out, and rushed to the front door of my apartment. My landlord Louise complained when I was late. She babysat Sadie when I worked. Or more like binged Netflix and ate my ice cream while Sadie slept.

“Tomorrow? Are you serious?”

“Well, I need to see if I can get us on a flight first, but if I can, are you okay with it?” I didn’t want to stay here another day after Richard’s threats.

“I’m fine with it, but you’re gonna pay through the nose for your tickets.”

“I don’t care if it takes all my savings. The sooner we’re out of here, the better.”

“Okay, call me in the morning when you have your flights. I’ll pick you up at the airport.”

Relief washed over me as I unlocked the door. “Thank you, Lisa. This means the world to me.”

“I’m happy to help. Talk soon.”

I entered my tiny apartment with a smile tugging at the corners of my lips.

“You’re late,” Louise whisper-shouted.

I winced, putting my phone in my purse. “Sorry.” It was now or never. “Louise, I’m moving out.”

Minnesota, here we come.
