We hurried behind Karma, my heart rate kicking up a notch.

“Jaynee?”

“Shit. It’s Richard,” I whisper-shouted to Karma.

“Just keep walking like you don’t hear him. The door isn’t far.”

“Jaynee!” His footsteps sounded closer. “You forgot Sadie’s backpack at the house.” He grabbed my arm. “Didn’t you hear me calling your name?”

I tugged Sadie closer, touching my finger to her lips, hoping she didn’t say anything. “Sorry. I was lost in my thoughts.”

He studied me with a suspicious eye. “Why were you going into the lunchroom?”

“The lost and found is in there.”Think, Jay, think. “Sadie lost her hair scrunchie.”

He screwed up his face. “I’ll buy her more.” He thrust the backpack into my chest. “Take her to class.”

Crap. Sadie’s room was in the opposite direction of where I was supposed to go. Karma was gone. Good. I didn’t like her getting mixed up in this.

I turned toward the lunchroom, hesitating far too long.

“What? Take her to class,” Richard hissed.

“But it’s her favorite scrunchie.”And the love of my life is waiting for me.

“I don’t care.” He grabbed my arm and tugged me away.

My heart sank. Of course, fate would screw me over and prevent me from being with Zander. If Richard ever figured out whatalmosthappened, he’d never let us leave his home.

Sadie suddenly released my hand. I stopped to find out what she was doing. I couldn’t believe it. She was running to Zander.

This couldn’t be happening. Zander lifted her into his arms, hugging and kissing her as he whispered into her ear. His gaze met mine when Karma took Sadie. A man I hadn’t seen before escorted them to the lunchroom.

Zander stalked toward me with a look that said:Come here, baby. I ripped my arm out of Richard’s grasp and ran to my man.

“What the hell! Jaynee, don’t do this.” Richard looked around. The halls were nearly empty, which meant the bell would ring any second. “Where’d Sadie go?”

Zander put his arm around me. “Let’s go.”

“I’ll file for full custody, Jaynee, if you dare leave with him,” Richard said in a warning tone. “I’m shocked he’s here. I should report him. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. Call the police.”

My feet stopped.

Zander took my face in his hands. “No, baby. He’s manipulating you. Just trust me.”

I stared into his eyes. Trust him? I did with my whole heart and would do whatever he said. “Okay.”

Zander took my hand and led me to the back.

Of course, Richard followed, spewing his threats. “This is kidnapping, Jaynee. You’re stealing my daughter. You and your boyfriend will rot in jail for this.”

“Don’t listen to him. He’s trying to scare you.” Zander helped me into the SUV.

“It’s working.” If Richard was right about me going to jail and losing custody of Sadie, I’d die.

“I promise, it will all be okay.”

I slid in. “How do you know?”

“Because only God himself could keep all of us apart.”

Richard ran toward the car.“You’ll regret this, you bitch. I’ll take Sadie away from you and you will never see her again!”

Myherohopped in and slammed the door. “Go!”
