Jaynee’s reaction to going home concerned me big time. What was her story? I doubted she’d open up to me, a total stranger. Lucky for her, I was a good guy and patient.

I waited for our food. When I asked Sadie if she was hungry, she nodded with her hand over her mouth. It was weird how she did that.

Away from everyone, I took this opportunity to call Storm. We should’ve been halfway home by now. Prez wouldn’t like me going off the plan for the day.

“What’s up?” Prez answered.

“I got a situation here.”

“Is everyone okay?”

“Yeah. We’re good. It’s a mom and kid that’s in a bind.” I glanced at Jaynee holding Sadie on her lap. They didn’t talk much, only watching their surroundings. Jaynee appeared uncomfortable sitting with Sugar, Tina, and Ryder.

“What mom and kid?”

“It’s a long story. The mom is Jaynee. She and the kid flew into MSP from Vegas. They needed a ride, we took them to Jaynee’s girlfriend’s house, but the cops were there. It sounded like the friend had been killed.”

“Shit. Any idea what happened?”

“No. The cop wouldn’t say. Maybe Grizz could use his talents and find out.”

“Yeah, text me the address of the friend. What’re you gonna do about the woman and kid? You could put them on a plane and send them home.”

“That’s the thing. I offered to do that, but Jaynee practically came out of her skin as if terrified to go back to Vegas.”

“Number forty-eight,” the McDonald’s worker called.

I stepped forward. “Thanks.” I took the tray. “Our food is ready,” I told Storm. “I’m not sure what time we’ll be back.”

“Don’t get roped into fixing this woman’s problems. Sugar and Tina need to come home.”

“I’m not going to leave her in a new city where she doesn’t know anyone.”

Storm sighed. “It’s not your problem, man. She’ll figure it out.”

I gritted my teeth. Storm could turn off his emotions when it came to other people. Not me, especially when it was a mom and kid.

“I’ll keep you posted,” I told him.

“Lynx, I want you to bring Sugar and Tina home.”

“I will.”

Prez ended the call. I knew he was pissed, but I’d make sure Sugar and Tina got home safelyafterI helped this stranded mom.

I carried the tray to the drink station, filled the cups, and went to our table.

“I got a chicken nuggies happy meal for you, peanut.” Nuggies? Where the fuck did that come from?

Sadie bounced on Jaynee’s lap. Under her hand, I could tell she was smiling.

Strange kid.

“I know you said you didn’t want anything, but I bought you a cheeseburger and fries anyway. Coke okay?” I set the food in front of Jaynee.
