I reached to take back my device, but he twisted away. “Give me my phone.”

He brushed my hand away. “Your worst nightmare is who I am, motherfucker.”

Oh my gosh. This couldn’t be happening.

I tugged on his sleeve to no avail. His arm didn’t even move. “Please give me my phone.”

“Oh yeah? You don’t want to mess with me either, asshole. Now leave Jaynee alone.” He ended the call, grabbed my hand, and tugged me out of the building.

“What are you doing?” I hurried to keep up with his long strides. “I can’t leave Sadie alone.”

“She’s fine.” He spun me around, putting my back against the side of his SUV. “Tell me everything,” he commanded through gritted teeth.

Yeah, I definitely liked his snarky attitude better. For a second, I almost did as I was told. But just because Zander had a tough-guy vibe, like maybe he’d done some illegal things before, didn’t mean I was compelled to answer to him.

“You don’t get to order me around. Who do you think you are?” Like seriously. We only met an hour ago.

“Was he your husband?” Zander leveled his gaze at me.

“God no, not that it’s any of your business.”

Relief crossed his face. “Boyfriend?”

I put my hands on my hips and pursed my lips. I wasn’t talking anymore.

Zander’s face turned red. “Don’t you see I’m trying to help you? That asshole on the phone threatened you. He said you stole his kid.”

My jaw dropped. “I did nothing of the sort. Sadie is my kid. He’s nothing but a sperm donor.” I snapped my mouth shut. How did he get me to talk?

“So he was telling the truth, and you refuse to talk.” He tilted his head back and looked up at the sky. “Why me? Why the fuck does this shit happen to me?”

Guilt flooded my chest. “Don’t worry. We’ll be out of your hair right now!” I turned around to get my suitcases off the luggage rack.

Zander’s hand wrapped around my wrist. “Stop. I’m sorry. All I’m trying to do is help you out, but you’re more difficult than I’m used to.”

“Oh, lovely. Don’t hold back. You wouldn’t be the first person to call me a pain in the ass today.”

He snorted. “I didn’t actually call you a pain in the ass, but hey, it sounds like you know you are.”

I glared at him.

A heart-stopping smile spread across his face. “Come on, Jaynee. Let kind, adorable, and generous Zander be a good Boy Scout so he can sleep tonight.”

Okay, it was impossible to not smile. “How do you plan to help me?”

“I’ll get you a hotel room, then you can tell me about the douchebag on the phone.”

“You should just walk away, Zander. Nobody does what you’re suggesting for a stranger.”

“Jay, you’re not in Vegas anymore.”

Clearly, I’m not.

“I’ll let you be a Boy Scout, but let me make one thing very clear.” It was weird how my stomach knotted, but I needed to make this hottie understand he wasn’t getting sex for his good deeds.

He crossed his arms over his chest, suddenly serious. “What’s that?”

“Absolutely nothing will happen between you and me.”
